This is how I like to build them, except I prefer the blade upside down to the way you have them for better "scratching" the dirt out of the bed. However your way gives a more crisp edge to the trap bed. I can see folks liking them either way! I do not like the blades on the angled heads of some hammers, like these... because they like to "skip" across the ground when its frozen.

AR 400 is a high tensile strength, abrasion, and impact resistant steel commonly used on Heavy machinery such as excavation equipment.

I bought the Estwing maul a long time ago, bought the other hammer few years ago put a long handle on it to beat the longer stakes in find that I like it better for setting, traps in sod ground and pulling up debris. Haven't broken either one YET!

The smaller one above is the Fireside Friend. I have 2, one for the wood stove and one for deep frozen ground.

The 2 by josh at Furshedfabrication are about as close to perfect as you will find. I looked at them at the PA rondy and they are works of art. I will have a long handle one before November gets here!

I have an original High Roller Hammer from OGorman circa 1978, Another by DCTM, and ones I tried to weld. I may have an addiction lol.

Thats the right angle for the blade, doesnt throw dirt in your face.

I use a estwing framer that i ground out the claw a little for the stake to fit better when pulling

the top pic (short handle), what kind of hammer is that? I've been looking for one. Any ideas on where to find one?

Haven't broke the head off my Estingwing masonary hammer. But why kneel down when you can swing a big axe standing up. Pound in 3-4 sets come back with a gas powered drill knock in my holes dig my pilot hole for disposable stake while setting in trap or even better yet 1 dirt or 2 dirt hole 2 flat sets done an gone in minutes.

Most of the big box hardware stores have their own line of tools, and most have steel shank hammer like and Estwing, but dont cost arm and leg, one brand has them with a nice high vis orange handle

Stanley makes a nice steel shanked engineer hammer in the their anti-vibe line for guys that want to weld their own.....weld as cool as possible to get penitration, and slow air cool....

PCS has a nice 3 pound hammer that has a welded on pipe handle and a digging cutter. Curing edge has a slot milled in the center for pulling rebar stakes - works great to pull and can use as sort of a slide hammer to jack stakes out of the ground. The hammer is a bargain at the price. With extensive use the face peens - just grind it as needed. It is my preferred hammer for setting dog proof traps when anchored with either cable stakes or rebar.

Furshedfabrication makes great hammers with digging edges. I prefer the Estwing hammers with the shock grip. The stubby is great. The engineer hammer is great, I have not tried the other.

The Estwing Fireside friend is great for chopping trap beds and throws the chips sideways instead of in your face. Great for driving stakes too.

A mattock or Pulaski axe is great for getting down to business chopping frozen beds. Great for standing chopping and digging.

To prevent losing or leaving tools behind, I spray a portion of each tool with Rustoleum white primer and then fluorescent orange paint. The white primer makes the fluorescent paint really glow.

Good hammers are great ........ A GREAT tip that I learned on here from Taximan is to pre-drill frozen ground with masonry bits using a good cordless hammer drill. The Bosch carbide masonry bits in 3/8” or 1/2” x 18” or 24” are very durable. The 1” is great for drilling out trap beds in frozen ground. This makes driving stakes easy and saves wear and tear on sore joints.

Before the ground freezes, ship builders bits are great for pre- drilling stake holes.

IMO you can't go wrong buying from redneck trapper. I saw a lot of his products leaving Tha PTA rondezvous in the hands of happy trappers. I have a few of his wares and am very happy with them.

Tom Stalker builds equipment that last. Didnt test it on a part time line neither. It held up and did its job. Nothing but good words to say about his products.

I have a hammer from Redneck on its way. Been notified it has been shipped, thats fast service. I expect this hammer will last a long time. Tired of buying cheap crap that fails when you need it. I guess you get what you pay for.
