I've only hunted black bear once and didn't see a thing, but where we hunted was about 5 hours away so I wasn't able to prebait. I might try going again next year because I know I can't do it this year. I'm going to pay someone to prebait for me, how long before I hunt should I have them start baiting?

Trapping is easy you say? You try getting your target animal to step in a 3 inch area of its whole territory.

If you know they are around, regularly in the area, bait today and hunt tomorrow.

You need to get them coming then you need to keep them coming until you hunt. You don't need any book to tell you that.

Michigan allows you to bait for bear 31days before the start of the season in your unit. So basically not before that.

Not and expert but seems like it takes about a week for a bear to get on a bait especially if competing with other baits. Then you must freshen your bait every few days to keep the bear coming. If you run out of bait the bear will quit coming and you will have to start over.

Rats experience has been mine. Keep the bait full, #1 bait the at the same time say 11 till 1 only... I bait at 11 am every 3rd day.

As stated above by topknot, your limited by law as to when you can legally set a bear bait. Example.....if your bear hunt starts on September 10th, you can set bait on the 10th of August. If you start early the DNR will surprise you with a visit to your bait on opening evening. You will not only be ticketed, but will not be able to use the illegal bait station. Ouch! It happens all the time in my area. The C.O.'s are quite good at sniffing out early baits too.

I would not do that.

Bait then come back in a week or two to see if baits been hit. I only start hunting once there’s a bear big enough to get me excited. . Takes anywheres from 2 weeks to a month. If you’re after a small bear, you can start hunting as soon as it’s hit. The sows come in heat later in the season for us, so no rush for me.
If you’re baiting every 3 days then that means you’re not bringing in enough bait!

4 weeks should be great. had so many bears coming to my bait pile ...wisconsin has to darn many . takes 11 yrs to get a tag at my cabin which is plain stupid. use liquid smoke unprocessed .just like tar.with your bait... draws bears in for miles. I had over 50 different bears hitting one bait pile ...and I have pics to prove it. 6 sows with cubs one had 4 cubs. even had a collared bear ....ended up killing a 325lb ...had 2 bears over 400 but got busted on one. wind swirls up here. could have shot almost any one I wanted left lots of 200lbs go...

might be easier to get a tag , they are issuing a new record number of tags this year or next. about time if they let the bears get more plentiful they were going to start having them compete with the homeless in Madison.

In the spring,I doubt you'll have a bear hang around for a month, they like to roam around. They may stick around a bait for a few days after they discover it,if there is stuff they like.
I don't hunt over bait but have worked with outfitters, and know bears habits.I agree with baiting then check in 5 days to a week, and if it is hit start maintaining the site and hunt it.

Also have about 4 different baits out in different areas, before you choose which one to hunt. After choosing the one to hunt you can forget about the other baits, and just maintain the one you hunt, unless you want more than one bear. There is also the chance to take several bears off one bait if you are in a good area.

We have a fall season, it was just on my mind today

Trapping is easy you say? You try getting your target animal to step in a 3 inch area of its whole territory.

What is a fair price to pay someone to bait for me? I can't be up north for a month or even a week before season obviously so I'll have to pay someone

They furnish the bait, or are you looking to deliver a bunch of bait to someone and just pay them to lug it out when your not there?

Brother in law - used to get $100 per week and bait cost.( 2 active sites was the goal)
So he was $300 minimum, plus bait cost, depending on your hunting area preference.

He has got away from it.
Not sure anymore what is reasonable.

I'd want them to buy it and put it out, it's a couple hundred miles away from me where I bear hunt so it'd be difficult to deliver it
