In Alabama, you can make open water sets in any public waterway as long as you are 10 feet from the bank. This is under the assumption that you don't have landowner permission for the waterfront property, hence the 10 foot standoff. Since this takes away setting the water's edge, what are some ways you all would approach this for beaver and otter? For the sake of the scenario, we'll say that you can set on fallen or standing timber as long as you are 10 feet from the shoreline. Of course we don't freeze up, so ice is not a factor.

For beaver,set the 330 same as at shore,only as a swim thru set(trap 2/3 under water),with a minimal amount of fencing and lure to line him up.

I don't know how effective a float might be there but that could be an option.

There is/used to be about a dozen pix of different beaver floats in the Archives....I'd use FLOAT in the Search window.

I built half a dozen floats for 330s using cedar. Got some input from Aix. They turned out really well.
