I have an idea for a horizontal skinner that pulls both ways so my old butt don't have to stand so long.
My question is has any one tried it.
And should I use a spreader bar for the fur pull end or just two cables, one to each clamp and run them into a pipe where they run up the well
Just figured someone has done this already
Just trying to avoid spending time on something might not work
Thanks

I built a horizontal skinner. I really like it. Mine just pulls one side. Spreader both ends but you might get by without one on the fur end.

It works just fine with spreader on each end.
It's the way I went with it ceiling height changled space.

I built a poor mans skinning outfit that was fairly cheap and works for me on coyotes and otter especially. It’s just a 12 foot upright 4x4 treated post mounted upright in the center of my fur shed due to the height needed above the joists and attached to one of the ceiling joists with a bolt and sitting on the floor. The floor takes the pulling weight. I have a roller guide mounted on the top like you see on the front of boat trailers with bolts. I went to TSC and bought a fifty dollar winch and mounted on one side of the post. Took the cable up over the roller guide and over on the other side. I have vise grips with flat bars welded to the jaws on chains mounted solid to the floor to grab the pelt.
It’s not as pretty as a store bought machine but serves me ok. I only use it on coyotes and otter. Pulls otter off like a mink.Just be careful and know when to stop in areas that need the knife. I’ve never pulled a carcass in two but if you get too happy with the winch it could happen.

I can't see the advantage from pulling both ends.
Pulling from one end is fast and controllable.

When I think horizontal, I think easy peasy like this...

This is how I made mine...only I built mine on a portable "bench" mounted on casters, so that I can roll it around to move it, or get it out of the way. I usually store mine under a boat. Mine is 2 layers of 3/4" boards, so it is pretty stout.

When it is being used, I set it up on a free standing work bench that sits in the middle of the shop.

I just don't what to stand anymore than I have to on concrete.
My plan is to sit in my chair and not have to move.
I don't have a big shed. Right now I'm 16 by 10 not an over abundance of room.
I have all the parts to make it.
When I get it together next month I wiil post pics
I think it should be purrrty slick lol

The rest of the table top allows room for knives, etc. Covered with cardboard and paper, of coarse. wink

yukonal,
How much horizontal room or run do you need on a set up like that to say skin coyotes?
Thanks
Mac

That one is 7'. I can re-grip to peel a longer 'yote. Or, anchor the vice grip clamps at the wall to create more length.
