Back in the early spring of '82 a fellow I worked with was treed by a bear in the Deadstream Swamp, just across the county line a bit from my place. It ran him up a tree at 2:30 in the afternoon and kept him there for hours. He was in his early 50's at the time and even though he was born and raised in northern Michigan, it was the first live bear he had ever laid eyes on. That bear finally tired of terrorizing him around 7:30 that evening.....after the guy had whizzed out of the tree. He said the smell of the pee apparently bothered the bruin and it acted agitated and moved off 50 yards or so and my old friend climbed down and vamoosed.
EDIT>>>The folks at the National Office gave the guy permission to carry a weapon the rest of the time he worked in that area. He was a soil scientist mapping soils for the Soil Conservation Service, an agency of the USDA now called the Natural Resources Conservation Service. When he first saw the bear it was 50 or so yards off, and doing a low "woof" sound. He pulled a large plastic whistle from his pack and blew on it, figuring it would scare the bear. It just made the bear mad and it came at him. He knew I was a bear hunter and gave me that whistle as a gag. It was on display in my taxidermy showroom for decades, with a tag that said "official Soil Conservation Bear Call". I still have it.

Could have used that advice on November 2, 2011. Will not forget that morning a twice tagged bear tried to bully me out of "his" treestand.
