The favorite lure thread got me thinking. What baits do you make sure stay with you on the canine line?

If I use bait it is likely beaver based. I use Dobbins bait and a local guy makes some good stuff. I’d say half the time, I just use a gland or curiosity lure with a shot of urine, and keep on trucking. I’m a small time trapper so I’m probably hurting myself.

I still have around 12 jars of the old original bait which they now call a lure. I haven't seen much of an indication of any cats walking by it in the snow, if they are near it I usually have them. I tried to order more online, but quickly realized they were now calling it a lure with less product for more money. A local fur buyer had a couple cases and I bought what I could get my hands on of the old stuff.

To the original question just about any commercial bait will work in my opinion it's more about location. Try a couple pints of some you are interested in head to head and let the coyotes decide. Anything based off of the nelson formula seems to do just fine. There's some great baits I've had success with including Cletis's Apple Road (I had extra glands added), Marty Smith's Keg Creek Kick ***, RK's predator bait before Kaspar sold the company, and Die Hard C from Ed Schneider performs very well early.

Last year I ran John Graham's Cat Creek later in the season, and it out performed my go to baits on the line. He will receive my business again this year. It outperformed lured sets as well as another very well known lure maker's bait (I'm not going into detail which I ran against because it doesn't really matter). I was very surprised with how loud it was as it was able to get the coyote's attention, but I actually had less non-target (coons, possums, and skunks) running it compared to the other mellow bait.

There's definitely no magic in a bottle and if the coyotes aren't there it doesn't matter who's bait is in the hole, but if I had to choose one commercial bait to run tomorrow it would be Graham's Cat Creek.

Beaver and venison liver based baits seem to work the best for me here, but I use some fish too. Some chunked, but most in paste form.

I have used Cavens Hiawatha valley, Predator Plus, Rich Kaspars, Bob Jamesons, Paul's Beaver Medley, Powder River Paste Bait, Bud Guidry's, Carmens Bushwacker and I am sure several I have forgotten. All of these baits were superb down here in the south. The big thing down here is to not over bait nor over lure as it is warm more than it is cold. The damp soil also helps with the volatility of both lures and baits. I forgot Junes different baits. For some reason that crawfish bait he made was pure death on coyotes, cats and greys not to mention those big boar coons roaming for lovers.

Southern snares spiked mice alone in a dirthole is a great setup. It is a borderline bait/lure though. I usually don't use bait as it cuts down some on the possum skunk take.

I've never used it but I hear Caven's "Hiawatha Valley", Kaatz "Red Label", and MarkJune's "Widowmaker" are really good. I'm hoping to try them this season as well as Reuwsaat's "Teepee Creek" & "Deep Creek"
