I wish we had birch trees around here.
I've never found any fat wood in the wild yet. Not much pine or cedar around here, either.

Beav I think technically you are right but I just find an old rotted tree and kick all the rot off. Any hard petrified like pieces in the center and all the knots I consider fat wood. They all burn great but put off a lot of smoke. You could set them in the water for a day pull them out and light them on fire.

So far I've found fatwood in Jack, Red, Scotch and White pines. Colorado Blue and White Spruce. Eastern Redcedar and Paper birch.
As to submerging fatwood in water, I have soaked fatwood, Paper birch bark and a ferrocerium rod in a bucket of water for two weeks. Took them out, shook 'em off, scratched and had flames in seconds. Pretty good stuff!

I have a hand held electric planer I like to run a bunch of fine chips with it from fat wood. It catches a spark as good as anything and if you press some together and light it of the initial bit that got the spark, it burns quite a while to start the thicker stuff like pine cones. The rest is easy. I also like the paraffin smell it has.

Don't know about birch But It's the turpentine In the pine trees that create lighter or fat wood.
