This ^^^ :lol

Yup, baldies are way worse than paper wasps. They and their nests are much tougher. All the papers are dead here in SE WI. Blue Jays n such have trashed their nest for the larvae. Rains have what's left rotting quickly. Haven't seen any baldies lately... but you never know.

Raid work well. If you hit them with the can just behind the neck. One whack and they are done for. Try it. If there are more then one, its a good idea to have a can in each hand.

Wasps gather at the hive at dusk so nuke it just after dusk and kill em all.

Fear not, Trapperman friends! Old Moosetrot is going to wait till it is dang cold to deal with that thing. I plan on cutting it down and putting it in a bag with a healthy dose of Raid or something so they will sleep the Winter away peacefully.

Not real mobile right now and would rather not do the "Dance of a Thousand Stings".

I was thinking about just boxing it up and sending it to the Patriots locker room overnight.

I think bald faced hornets all die except for some queens that have mated. The queen will start a new nest the next year all by herself. Winter weather will wreck the old nest. The new nest will only be a couple inches in diameter. After some eggs hatch all she does is lay more eggs and the new hornets keep working on the nest. Hard to understand how it grows (unlike a pumpkin) they must be constantly working on it.
Jim
I don't know how this works if they never have freezing weather.

Well, took a look at the nest today and a bird has already been at it. Big hole in the side of it.

This fully substantiates my usual modus operandi...sit around and wait for a while and the problem will take care of itself!

Now, what do I deal with next?

Thanks for all the advice, folks!

It amazes me any bird can break into their nest and not get stung badly in the places that aren't covered with layered feathers. Im guessing that happens in daylight , hence the hornets being active in defense. Sure would be something to see !

Fairly cold here (mid-40's) now so I am assuming they are dormant if they are in there.
