They usually do their damage out at the end of the chain. Rarely do they dig by the anchor. Foul smelling critters, not the highlight of my day when I catch one.

They are just prepping the dirt for you to wax it, badger mounds are my favorite place to collect dry and worked dirt and often lots of it in 1 place.

Been awhile since I snagged one, but the last one I trapped, a female about like the OP got, dug the usual donut shaped hole, mounding all the outside dirt up over the top of the earth-anchor type cable stake I'd used....then the darn thing dug a cavern down under the heap-o-dirt and the end of the cable anchor was literally hanging down slightly into the cavern from above, like a chandelier!
