Not a cowboy don't pretend to be one! Nothing wrong with cowboys I just ain't one, I know a bunch good friends that are but I'm a ball cap and work boots kind of guy. Nothing sillier looking then a drug store cowboy to me.
Was born in a Big City Will die in the Country OK with that!

used to wear one when i was younger.. had some nice broke in hats.. good in rain. had to wear a hard hat most of my life for work, wear a leather ball cap otherwise, i like to wear a straw cowboy hat when its hot but boy the good ones got spendy these last few years..i had enough being around 300 wild range cows to qualify for wearing one if i want to.. Dad had 125 head but ours were pretty tame a few high headed (This word is unacceptable on Trapperman) .. ( beeches ) .but my uncle's were a different story he was old and never got out on the ground with them, always in the tractor or pickup , even his new lincoln. cows were just fine till ya got out on the ground then look out it was tails to the wind ! I always thought the old guys were so brave to stand their ground when they came charging... now that im old and crippled up i realise if they could have moved they woulda been over on the high fence with us kids !!

Most cowboys here wear baseball caps when they work, hats for dresswear when they go to town. I get a kick outta the guys who wear their spurs to town though.
Life ain't supposed to be easy.

How many of y'all wear a cowboy hat? And I am not talking about those alternative lifestyle Australian type hats either. My next question is, why doesn't everybody wear one? I was in Texas about a month ago and looked at about 500 of them in a western wear store before I found a keeper. I am diggin' it. "alternative lifestyle Australian type hats " ?? I had no idea ! I wear Aussie hats and ride in full Aussie gear all the time. Have for years, as I find the gear light and superior to other rigs Ive used. Just think- all those rough tuff Aussie guys in the outback for generations....who knew ?

I have a favorite hat that I just spent fixing it up about the same $$ as I paid for it 25 or 30 years ago. I like it cause it keeps the rain and snow off of the back of my neck, ears and most all my head. Hope it last me the rest of my days. Even joke to my son that I want my ashes put in it and he can keep it on a shelf upside down with me in it!!

Most cowboys I know don't wear them because the don't want to look like a trucker. Being fair skinned I wear them a lot during the summer a nice felt one during the winter. Works for me.
Personal Accountability. That would fix most of our problems.

Yup. Same old hat for over 40 years. It's seen better days, but so have I. It's got a worn thru spot on the front crown, I've got a few of those spots too. The inner band is giving way, and the brim has long ago lost its up sweep. It still keeps the rain and snow from getting where I don't want it, and it covers the span from eye to my scope to keep the sun out. Tipped right it still enhances my hearing greatly. For all I've put it thru it's held up maybe a bit better than me. My passed fathers hat hangs in my game room, I would never wear it but I sure like seeing it. I think one day mine will hang next to it in my sons home, at least I hope so.
If you recall the movie Culpepper Cattle Company I think they showed the most realistic representations of yesteryear western hats.

Wore one almost everyday for 25 years now ball caps or wool stormy crumers sence im an office slug. Always had at least 4 around good straw for town and a palmleaf for work in the summer and at least one town felt and a church felt plus a work felt. Always preferred a 10x flat square crown. Still have my dad's hat with the Burt Reynolds feather hat band.
As for spurs when I rode 8 to 10 hours a day I had 2 sets of boots one for work with my spurs always left on and a after work town set. But Monday thru Saturday I walked out every morning with spurs and ended up in town on occasion in spurs. But always took them off before going to the bar lol. Unless I was getting a to go cup.
Not handy enough for a flat brim hat and always thought those taco hats were for guys that spent more time in the truck then the saddle.

I get that perfectly, nvwrangler. When I ride all day , I dont even think of my bumpers ( a milder shaped spur for dressage) and get groceries or whatever else on the way back to the house . I am tired and just like anyone else in their work clothes, I take care of my chores in town with full riding gear on, spurs and all. No one minds , in fact, young girls love to ask questions about riding at times, in line at checkout. It gives the chance to encourage them to seek and enjoy the outdoors. After all, this is the west , and ranch country

^ not at all uncommon to see gals or guys with ranch working gear on in town and in stores and eating places. Just the way of life here, why change different cloths an gear just to go to town.
I grew up wearing one but I don't have cattle or sheep now but I do still wear one all summer and fall. I work at the ranch and they serve a purpose just more then being a cowboy.
