What is it??? A friend of mine sent me this pic knowing I have a thing for identifying old gadgets. So all I know is some one sent him this pic of the item from someones estate. I don't know what kind of work or business this person who's estate this came from did? There is also nothing to scale this thing to, so no idea how big or small it is, or if there is name on it? It does looks to me like some kind of anchor or flaring tool? I'll say it first Pig Castorator...:-) What say All???? Mac

That is an impact firing pin for a bomb. Ok are you joking on this one? because I could see that working. Do know who to ask though. Actually would think if Paul has looked at this he would know that one. I still haven't found out yet from the person who sent my the pic what the item is. Really could be just about anything. Mac

Interesting, the rod has been machined for a spec. use, a hole in one end would indicate it is made to be pulled. I can't see it is made to fit into something because of the two screw heads on one side and the thread coming out the other side. I am going to go with a bearing puller or bushing puller.

Show the pic to my friend who is very versed in bombs and explosives. So from his expertise it is not a part of any known explosive device. Ask the person who sent me the pic if he knew any more? He said he did find out that it is only 2 inches long. So smaller than what I thought the photo suggested. I do think it could be a bushing puller or a flaring tool of some type. Might be something the person who made it used for his one special thing he needed it for?? Would help to know what that person did for a living? With the groove around it. Maybe it had an o-ring of some type in that groove. Drop it in some tube give it a jerk and scrap inside of tube out??? Who Knows?

Mac It appears the two sections with bolts or cap screws are made from brass, as to not cause damage, I vote for some kind of puller- seals, bearing or some kind of core After studying the tool noting that it is expandable, has a probe and a hole and ring for pulling, and is 2” long, and reading the comments quoted here, I modify my earlier suggestion. I now suggest that it is a combination tool. It is an oral surgeon’s tool for removing impacted teeth and a gynecologist’s tool for removing impacted tampons. Why would it be anything else!

Some kind of lapping tool. The loose ring looks like it fit's the center groove to control expansion.

Maybe holds something like a ring in the brass groove for making jewelry ?

Maybe holds something like a ring in the brass groove for making jewelry ? Like I said earlier I don't know what the person did that used this tool. Someone else who replied to my friends post on this did suggest a jewelers tool to hold or expand a ring. My fist thought was that it was used inside something to expand it. But with the little rivets not being flush on the sides. Seems less likely. Mac

Mac I did see a short video the person who has this thing made where they operate it open and close. Looks like whole tool is only about two inches long. The brass parts move back and forth on the two pins that are threw them. So that would mean you couldn't close it slide it inside something like a pipe then spread the body to flare the pipe or anchor the tool.. The little ring is just the right size to go between and hold the brass parts open.. I got no idea?? Mac

Muskrat I wish I could post the video I saw I can't even find it again now. When the brass parts slide in the pins are sticking out. So you could not slide that thing in a hole the diameter of the brass body. It could go in a pipe or tube just a bit bigger that the pin width? With maybe an o-ring or leather in the groove then be pulled back out to clear or clean the tube? Has to be something some one made for their one job/purpose??

Could it be some sort of puller for PEX or other tubing? With an o-ring on the slots in the brass parts, held open after insertion of the washer, it may have enough grip on the inside of tubing to pull it through a wall or whatever.
What do I win?
Moosetrot I was just gonna respond with a lifting or pulling device, when i read this. Same concept, rope / or hook thru hole to lift / pull with . Drop it in , lift / pull rope / washer slides down to lock brass into opened postition , lift / pull / transport item as needed. Set screws are to keep it centered and moving when when dropping down thru to bottom of item, think oval or slotted opening. Moose is probably on right track i'm thinking
