More would get harvested if there was a reasonably priced hunt.
There is a very fine line between "hobby" and "mental illness

When I lived there, resident take was miniscule. One of those, "How many bear skins does a person need?" deals. It is the same here, with a few exceptions.
Just doing what I want now.

Yes interesting numbers, would have thought there would have been more then 2 over 28 from stories you see posted also find the male to female break down interesting. Was curious as to if there was a break down on resident vs guided hunts in relation to size and sex of the bears. I do not know what it is in the provinces or the territories but in Minnesota we harvest 60% males as a rule. The last five years or so that has ticked up closer to 65%. The numbers on Kodiak seem right to me based on ours. Osky

Osky Ya that's why was wondering if numbers showing guided vs resident, most guided hunts the guy is looking for the biggest bear around so would think males, now im sure theres many clients once there realize its not that easy and don't want to go home empty handed. No in some areas some people are just concerned with lowering the population so may be residents that aren't after size just a bear.

Hearing the chain rattling in the dim early morning while running a bear trap line for brownies would be quite the rush. Especially if it went quiet as you approached.
We're the Kodiak Browns ever trapped?

Foot snares are used on griz, but I don't know about Kodiaks.
Forget that fear of gravity-get a little savagery in your life.

Here on the Kenai it’s like otter and AV said, “How many bear rugs does one guy need, or have room for?” I would easily kill 2-3 a year without looking for them just to help out the prey pops, but with the salvage requirements it’s a lot of work. From a resident’s perspective, Brownies are big vermin, with a lot of work legally required to kill them. I haven’t looked into the legality of selling any parts of them... have any of you guys?
Interesting stats Otter3006, thanks for sharing. Certainly a dense population on the island.
Boco couldn't catch a cold. But if he did, it would be Top Lot.
