Stopped by F&G today and picked up a report to share. Gusting 67 mph today here and holding on.
total fall harvest on kodiak 73 bears
10 from registration on road system
63 from drawing area
63% male-37%female
two made 28 inches for b&c
this island is under harvested, for an area just under 7 sq miles smaller than connecticut we have a robust population and they do very well here

More would get harvested if there was a reasonably priced hunt.

There is a very fine line between "hobby" and "mental illness

Yes interesting numbers, would have thought there would have been more then 2 over 28 from stories you see posted also find the male to female break down interesting.
Was curious as to if there was a break down on resident vs guided hunts in relation to size and sex of the bears.

When I lived there, resident take was miniscule. One of those, "How many bear skins does a person need?" deals.
It is the same here, with a few exceptions.

Just doing what I want now.

I do not know what it is in the provinces or the territories but in Minnesota we harvest 60% males as a rule. The last five years or so that has ticked up closer to 65%. The numbers on Kodiak seem right to me based on ours.

Ya that's why was wondering if numbers showing guided vs resident, most guided hunts the guy is looking for the biggest bear around so would think males, now im sure theres many clients once
there realize its not that easy and don't want to go home empty handed. No in some areas some people are just concerned with lowering the population so may be residents that aren't after size just a bear.

one is enough for most folks. i don t even have space to hang the one i have or the one my late buddy left me
not required to salvage meat only hide and skull. meat is greasy like a dead salmon and smells that way
guides are good at judging size and sex. you don t want to spend that kind of money and shoot a little one.
do not know breakdown on method of take
yes spendy hunt indeed but they do not make much i feel. cost of float plane travel, skiffs &.outboards. camp tents or cabins&.asst.guide/packer.optics[the best].back up guns and TIME invested. they are 6 figures plus invested before even leaving to take you
i would recommend spring hunts- better hides and twice as much daylight for hunting when your spending that kind of $ .i want to be the field at least a lot
500 $ tag plus license for non resident and required to have guide
resident 25$ and i can guide family members only of relation in the first degree
sure be nice if they upped the permits in remote areas" but might be " fought against by guides who want to not devalve the rates on hunts or growing those big bears.
just alone bear viewing is big big time$$$$ here taking folks out too.
i ve always associated these bears to raccoons , same habits but BIGGER, it be something to trap if you could

Hearing the chain rattling in the dim early morning while running a bear trap line for brownies would be quite the rush. Especially if it went quiet as you approached.

We're the Kodiak Browns ever trapped?

A lot of residents just shoot the first legal bear they see. It’s something I have never understood plus finding bears with 28” or larger skulls isn’t as easy as some people think. I have drawn Kodiak twice and hunted it both times for two weeks each and never saw a bear that large which is why I didn’t get one either time. One of these days I will cross paths with the right brown bear.

Here on the Kenai it’s like otter and AV said, “How many bear rugs does one guy need, or have room for?” I would easily kill 2-3 a year without looking for them just to help out the prey pops, but with the salvage requirements it’s a lot of work. From a resident’s perspective, Brownies are big vermin, with a lot of work legally required to kill them. I haven’t looked into the legality of selling any parts of them... have any of you guys?

Interesting stats Otter3006, thanks for sharing. Certainly a dense population on the island.
