Hello everyone I just finally got back on this site after 8 years. I finally have time to do some serious trapping again now that I am self employed. I have trapped a little every year with OK success for the amount of time in the field. I am going to get a nice line out this week for all critters and I really want to target some coyotes, they have become a big issue here in central NY. We are very cold with tempsin the single digits at night. Just looking for some advice and tips on trapping coyotes during the freeze here in the northeast. I look forward to hearing from you all.
Thank you

Yeah I've got the wax dirt and peat moss. Just wondering what sets everyone uses for the conditions. Anyone ever make a bunch of comotion in an area with there truck in the snow and then make you sets in that location? Something I plan to try in a couple locations

Step down dirthole set. Peat moss with calcium chloride mixed in to sift over your trap, but put some calcium chloride in the trap bed before bedding your trap to prevent it from freezing to the ground. Pack it really tight and if it's windy you can sift a thin layer if the dirt you dug out on top of the peat moss to keep it from blowing away. This has always worked for me in freezing temperatures.

I’ve been using buckwheat hulls inside the trap jaws covered in either waxed dirt or peat moss depending whether it’s a walk in line or a driving line. I have had really good results with the hulls so far, and I think I am going to continue to use them. Initially, I got them to cover my trap in dry pockets for mink, but I like them on my canine line too.
It’s tough to beat the eye appeal of a step down dirthole. I use a lot of flat sets and pipes in the snow too.
