I'm a fan of the .223 in an AR platform or a 22-250 in a bolt. I prefer a hollow point over the frangibles. Have had far too many explosive results with the v-max out of my guns and that all stopped with the hp. Not afraid of the shoulder with the hp.
For you .204 guys, what load are you using? A hunting buddy always gives me his coyotes and his .204 with the vmax is putting baseball size exits in 4 out of the last 6 coyotes. He's looking to reload something different. Great caliber as well Vmax SUCK as a coyote round!! 35 grain Berger's are what you want. To the op. Personally, I'd just stick with a .223

you asked for CALIBER...I agree with .22 using 55-63gr bullets If you'd asked CARTRIDGE, I agree with BC below. I piled up Idaho yotes out to 300 yds...even a bit further, but NOT on windy days. 250 is about the max. I used a .222 Rem 700 with handloads. Most of my dogs had 1 hole in, and a liquified boiler room. For the AR I think the Valkyrie is too much and you'll do a lot of sewing, personally. I'd ask the AR hunters here: http://www.predatormastersforums.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=cfrm since there is a forum JUST FOR ar shooters as well as www.ar15.com and don't forget www.ar15forum.com or even www.ar15armory.com (which I think is more for builders) hope this helps

I use a 22 250 with 53 gr Amax bullets loaded not overly hot 3500fps . I have good reach out and touch ability with it and it is fur friendly IF i do my part and stay off that flat shoulder blade ...There are those that also claim that the 17 cals available are great .. I'm sure they are , just makes a pinhole but you best be selective on your shots and in the case of the 17 hmr keep them close , Ive killed a few with my 17hmr but limit shots to standing targets under 75 yards.

In .223 you can get brass for reloading all day long and fairly cheap.

My oldest son used to get west with me and shoot coyotes and used his .204. It was very capable of putting big holes in fur. He eventually sold it. A rancher I know out there has a bolt .222 and a bolt .223 he inherited from his father. One he keeps in the tractor cab and one in his truck. He is a very good shooter and knocks down a bunch of coyotes every year with which ever rifle is at hand. Rarely if ever has he told me about any fur damage, nor have I witnessed any when with him.
In both examples above I do not remember which bullets were used. I do know that both the .222 and .223 are tried and true.

That's dead on, Use my .223 Remington R-15 in Texas, but use a .243 bolt gun east of the Mississippi...Not sure how easterns compare with northern coyote, but a few have gone over 50 pounds.
I like a .25-.06 for the really long beanfield pokes.

I use a .17 Remington and love it. Almost no fur damage. Haven't had the wind problems some talk about with I either. My partner shoots a .204. Bullets are everything in the .204. He shoots 35 grain Burgers and they usually don't come out on coyotes. If I was going to buy strictly a coyote gun, that's what I'd buy. Stay away from Vmax

Because I do not reload I got rid of my .204 the only ammo I could get was VMax and they were awesome for accuracy but splashed on impact leaving BIG holes to sew. I use a 45gr HP (Winchester white box) in my .22-250 and have great results and almost no fur damage. In my .223 AR I use a HP 55 gr. (Hornady Steel Match) with great results as well but I like the longer range of the 250 in my open area.

With a .204 Vmax makes holes. You need a berger bullet 35 or 40 GR. I'm a fan of the .223 in an AR platform or a 22-250 in a bolt. I prefer a hollow point over the frangibles. Some friends of mine run coyotes with hounds. They use mostly 223s or 22-250s. I've skun some of their coyotes. I don't what bullets they're using, but the 22-250s makes a much bigger exit wound than the 223s.
One day you'll find someone who is obsessed with you. It's probably going to be a dog. But, it is what it is.

I have all of the calibers listed above and the one that stays home is the204. I’ve tried every bullet on the market with terrible results. I’ve never shot a coyote with it that didn’t need sewing. When I hunt for fur I use the 17 Rem. With a 30 gr. Bullet. A .17 rem with 30 grain bullets is a great combo! I have had 2 .17-204' s built, a .17 rem on steroids, and use 30 Nagel bullets. Overall, the BEST coyote killer I've ever shot. Hey now, that would be doable in an AR I think??
