Mink are gas money on a multispecies trapline.Nobody I know here traps just for mink anymore while rolling by more valuable fur.Thats when the boxes shine. If your a one trick pony blind setting would be the best way to catch mink. I can agree with that. When we were targeting marten One of the lines was run by boat ( sturgeon lake) and we set quite a few mink/ marten boxes on the ground. We did catch a good number of mink.

That's right. I was just trying to find a way to use up over 100 110s, so I made up some mink boxes one year. Then I saw that those traps needed 2 springs on them, so I started doing that, and I'm not finished yet.
In the end, ifs about having the gear to do about anything in it's season. Them traps could just set there and rust away.

I wouldnt waste time with mink boxes. You'll catch way more mink using blind sets/bottom edge and they take half the time/hassle to put in. Throw them mink boxes in the woodstove and you'll get a little return out of them. Just my opinion. I will not argue your point. But one of the places I trap is slightly deeper than I care to wade when the shores are covered in ice and I have been thinking of using mink boxes in the high grass along shores. I bought a doz victor 120's since they have the 4 way trigger.

The beautiful thing about the mink box with a body grip, is the 3 day check. We don't want to overlook that. That might be the selling point on the whole idea.

Well that would suck, I suppose. No wonder the boxes didn't catch on in Wisconsin. If you could set 100 per day for 3 days, and go back to the beginning a start over, you could get rich.

I am seeing a pattern here. There is some sort of hidden dynamic, where they work here, but not in PA or WI.
I'll touch a little bit more on it in my upcoming book , "The secrets of the Box" .

It was good to see this thread. I am considering making no more that 6 boxes for next year, 160's in them. They would be placed along small streams/ditches that I would be going past while checking coyote sets. I see a fair number of mink in the area where I live. Summer, fall, spring. Many are not always close to water. Yeah, I know the 160's might also pick up coon or otter if they stick their head in. Plenty of sign for both. Same with me.I have about 1/2 mile of stream that I follow on my fisher/fox/coyote line. Checking a few boxes along the way will cover my coffee & gas.

And that is why I don't fool with 'em. I've been tempted to tinker with a mink box that would face open water. Mink gets caught, drops off in water and drowns. 4-day check. That would work. However, there would have to be a 'coon ambling along that would stick his leg in there, get caught, and not drown. Now it's an illegal set if I'm only checking it twice a week. Besides, if I've got open water I've got current, and I've got either colony traps or #150s on KB stabilizers working for me in bottom edge sets so why mess with the mink box? Another thought: it took some time to come up with a weasel box that would meet the extended check time here in WI. Maybe if there was enough interest in extended checks on mink boxes here, we could come up with a design that would keep 'coon out while allowing mink in. Maximum size hole for mink with distance trap is from hole. Just out of 'coon's leg reach. If I can't drown it, I don't set it. Period. Daily checks do not work in my schedule.
