You guys wanting to chop up and eat our resident Timber Rattlesnakes

need to know that all Rattle-Snakes and all other snakes, turtles,

Frogs and snapping turtles do have a designated hunting seasons

He has no way of knowing since NY protects them tighter than California does condors.
Against the law to cast a glance of aspersion in ones direction, let lone do what needs to be done to take a measurement.
Given these facts, I hereby declare myself the winner of this challenge per the rule of "Firsties", which, of course is inarguable and final by decree as outlined by the United Nations and the Geneva Convention under UN/GC code 601.371 et el "Firsties", subparagraph 601.371a et el "Nanny, nanny boo boo." (Also settled law, thus final.)
"70 inches it is.

He did not say if we are doing a live measurement or a dead snake measurement. Dead snakes tend to stretch a lot do to so many backbone joints and a 4 footer can become a 5 1/2 footer when picked up by the tail. Beautiful specimen of a timber rattlesnake, I hope he did not kill it.
The farther south you go the more yellow phase timber rattlesnakes you find.

Sorry Eric but that just isn't true. They are hard to measure live because they are tensed up but you can get within an inch. The skin itself will stretch beyond the true carcass length but nowhere near a foot and a half,on a snake that size.

I have measured a ton in the last 55 years, live, dead and green skins.I enjoy your posts but what you are saying here,is just way offbase.

As a former Ranger on Lake George that has helped relocate a number of these snakes I can testify that very few that I saw reached 48". They inhabit the mountains on both sides of the lake, are excellent swimmers, and often are found on the islands. These snakes are NOT aggressive. Leave them alone and they will leave you alone. These creatures are fully protected, and rightfully so.
The nasty snakes that will come after you are those reddish brown water snakes. The rattlers come in two color phases; black and yellow.
There is actually a camp on a small peninsula that has a snake fence from water's edge to water's edge.

LEAVE THEM ALONE AND DON":T KILL THEM. I hate spiders, but I don't go around killing them.

Well said AL,

We have Timber Rattlesnakes, Massasauga Pigmy Rattlesnakes, and Copperheads in New York State.

NYS Department of Environmental Conservation protects species diversity in New York State

and therefore protects all Indigenous native species found here;

even venomous snakes that people are afraid of.

People who are deathly afraid of snakes, venomous or otherwise, are irrational.

People are more likely to be hit by a falling coconut

than be bitten by a rattlesnake in New York State. laugh
