Tip:

I found a neat way to use PayPal in 2019. Get a bank account you only use with PPal and no one else. Capital One offers one (ZERO monthly fee, so clear out the balance all you want). I got it, use it, and yes, can go to any of their ATMs with a pin code and withdraw money. Delete from your PPal account all your credit cards, and other accounts.

Here you go:

THIS is how you avoid them taking $$ out

you forgot to ask the person to send it that way

They still get paid but through the sender instead of the receiver of the money. Correct? Costs them $103 to send you $100?

edit - this is if they don't have a balance on a paypal account or an account linked to their bank.

I think if you use the "friends and family" option in the US it is free whether sending or receiving. Otherwise there would be a 2.99% fee, $2.99 per $100.00 sent or received. That is what I paid for today's transaction.

Eh...wot?

I use paypal quite a bit and really like it.

According the them... "Sending money – Personal payments: There are no fees within the U.S. to send money to family and friends when you use only your PayPal balance or bank account, or a combination of your PayPal balance and bank account. There is a fee to send money as a personal payment using a debit or credit card."
- so long as they have money in a paypal account or it's linked to their bank its free, if I'm reading this correctly. Also Friends and Family option doesn't afford you "Buyer Protection" thus they have no recourse through paypal if you don't ship the goods.

In Lugnut's case Friends and Family is the way to go if whomever sending the money has a paypal account linked to their bank or has the money in their paypal account.

You can try Xoom for overseas transactions.

I looked up Xoom. Like Venmo, it is also owned by PayPal. It seems PayPal is cornering the market for online monetary transactions. Xoom's fees are almost double what PayPal's are for international transfers.

Venmo looks like the least expensive with the most options for free transfers.

PayPal tried ripping me off a few years back. I tried and tried to get straight answers from them and they wouldn't cooperate. I was buying and selling quite a bit through eBay at the time. It got to the point they were adding charges amounting to hundreds of dollars a month for interest and penalties. I finally got in touch with the consumer's affairs office in Ohio Attorney General's office and within two weeks time … I never heard anything more from them. The AG's off ice told me if they started harassing me again about it … they could stop them from doing business in Ohio. It has been about 5 or 6 years now and I have not heard anything from them. Of course, I can no longer buy anything from eBay either since everyone is bullied in to using PayPal.

Yeah, if you want to buy or sell on Ebay, you don't have much choice but to use PayPal.
