I still have about 3 boxes of strike anywhere wood matches. Someone was telling me that you can't buy them anymore, I haven't looked yet but will. My question is the wood matches you have to have, the box for striking them to light, will they light by butting up the ends and twisting them together to cause friction? I was told that is the only other way they will light. Anyone have some of those matches, will that work to light them with out the box?

You can buy strike anywhere matches on Amazon. Now called Diamond green light strike anywhere matches. Ohio Blue Tips, we call them blueticks, are now strike on box. I've heard the shipping companies are the cause of the strike anywheres getting hard to find, they consider them hazardous bc the white tip is white phosphorus. I've never tried twisting strike on boxes together. I hate them with a passion. Poor excuse for a match.

^ ya, they suck bad. That is why I thought if anyone had them if they would try to light them by twisting end to ignite them and see if it works. I looked and you still can buy strike anywhere matches from Amazon like you said. Thanks

White phosphorous match production was outlawed in 1913. What is used now is phosphorus sesquisulfide and potassium chlorate.

I know they are still available cause I just bought a box at RuralKing. Not the kind Paul is talking about.

Them strike on box are a pain. However I knew a guy that had a pocket full of strike anywhere matches one 4th july for lighting firecrackers. They rubbed in his pocket and all lit up. He dropped his pants in public and still had a burn in a bad spot.

Thanks for clearing that up Paul.

Strike anywhere matches will light when struck on anything.....your zipper or front teeth. I use them for frying fish. Throw one in the oil and when it lights the oil is hot enough. We had mice get into a box of them when I worked in Idaho and were told the mice must have chewed on them. Anyway, it burned the cabin down.

I have nothing clever to put here.

160user >>> I keep all my matches in a tin box that has a latch if knocked to floor it won't open. I heard a lot of bad story's about that same thing. I just wonder if the box only strike matches, if they can be light with striking them or twisting them together. I was hoping someone had some and would try. LOL

snowy, The strike on box matches will not light if you rub the heads together. In my experience they don't always light when struck on the box. The new green headed ones are

worse than the old red headed ones. sick

Ya, that is what I thought. Someone told me they will light every time by holding one in each thumb and pointer finger and twist the ends together. I just tried the green strike anywhere and when you twist them they light right now.

All of them should be illegal except the really old Ohio Blue Tips. I'm surprised the newer ones haven't caused someone to freeze to death by now.

Even better if you put those match heads in a piece of pipe with caps on both ends. Fuzing and ignition is only limited by one's imagination.

I experimented with yarn and gas from my outboard tank. When it went off it shook the windows out of the house.

^^^ LOL >>> that reminded me a guy I know we bought one of those water guns that will rotate to water his grass. He built a stand 5 feet high and such. When he fired it up and started shoot water out it broke every window in his house on the south side. LOL He has an old house with single pane glass windows. His wife wasn't happy with him. LOL When he told me the story I was on the ground laughing.

Those were the strike anywhere. I still have the scar under my right thumbnail from showing a chick how cool I was.
