Do you share how many Dollars per bale people are asking? I saw an out of state truck hauling hay to West Virginia and my curiosity is killing me. I've heard 60-65 per bale for a round bale. Any one care to share?

I paid $4.00 a bale, today, for orchard grass, timothy, other mixed grass and clover, second cutting, 60 pound bales. Round bales are mostly $25.00 to $50.00 each.

In 2012 - 2013, during a drought, I bought a lot of hay. I always weighed a few bales from each source when calculating my winter feed needs for my beef herd, based on AU's and animal type.

Big Round Bales (15% moisture or less), weight can/will vary a bit by baler. Certainly contingent on how tight the bales are rolled up.

4x5 = 700 - 900 lbs ave.

5x5 = 1100 - 1250 lbs ave

5x6 = 1500 - 1800 lbs ave

Free from my hunting buddy. His less quality stuff his wife doesn't want to feed to the horses. But an 80-pound square bale is like $7 a bale.

Trader Vic is correct on weight in general. Hay in WI, 5X6 100-150, 3x3x8 1st crop 100-125, 2nd crop 124-150. Drought then flood this summer, terrible 2nd and 3rd crops.
Small squares: 5.00-8.00

With all the rain here, making hay was a real issue. Dairy quality alfalfa 2nd and 3rd cutting at weekly auction here is $180-$270 per ton.
Good 1st cutting $120-$160 per ton
poor 1st cutting $150 and down
Most round bales of older grass here say 800 lbs. are $40-$60 each depending upon quality.
Most small squared are $5-$7 per bale
Straw, clean for cow rations $120-$160 per ton, poorer straw $120 and down.

Lot of people really nervous about our hay crop for this year with the wet fall, open winter and then the real cold. We have snow now but lots of ice in the lower spots in the fields.

Its like asking how much a car costs. Hay can range from $50/ton to over $200/ton.
