I have 10 pounds of frozen ground bison that I would like to make into canine bait. Now I got the meat, bucket ,frozen caster from two beavers and a half pint of sodium bens. Is there a “cookbook “ so to speak that I can buy ? Thanks

Mix with Dobbin's or one of the other various bait solutions on the market. Much easier to you know you got it "right". Theyve already done the hard part of testing and evaluating etc to ensure the bait works. You simply add the meat and taint it as you like.

Thank you sir! The Dobbins solution, sounds like the solution! Lol are there directions about the tainting process included with the Dobbins?

I don't believe so. There is instructions as far as mixing it up. A bottle to a gallon of meat. He supplies SB but you might wanna add a little extra if you have it on hand and I learned MP will stop molding if you need to store it long....I mixed mine 6 years or so ago and have a litttttttle bit of mold but not anything that bothers me.

If you read through a few pages on here, or the archives, you'll find lots of posts on tainting. A lot of guys like to taint till the outside of the meat is grey and inside is still pink. How long that takes....depends on the temps and such. Also you want to avoid flies and other bugs getting in while it taints.

You can also use the meat fresh. Cube or grind to your liking and then mix in the solution and SB/MP.

I've done the same with meat that I've grabbed from freezers that kicked the bucket or were unplugged on accident and thawed.

Walmart sells clear plastic 1 gallon jugs for a buck or 2. I use them to measure a gallon of meat out (guess you could use an old milk jug but I don't drink milk..lol). I then mix it all in a 5gal bucket or whatever. Mix and stir it regularly...I don't get religious about it..but every couple days for a month or 2. You just wanna make sure it's mixed well and saturated well. Then I store it either in the gallon jug or into glass jars...I save all my glass jars and use them on the line. I think I'm going to start storing it in bulk and carry plastic on the line. Glass is heavy and likes to break...

Not difficult and produces a good bait. I have some of Bob Jameson's and Clint Locklear's solutions mixed up as well as Dobbin's.

Not sure if 10lbs will yield more than a gallon though.... just a guess but it'll probably make a gallon or a bit less. Beaver, bobcat etc all make good meat bases if you have any or are still trapping this season.

Speaking of that....I need to find the time to get out and snag a couple beaver.

Thank you mauser06! So mix the solution with the meat and stir it every once in a while, till I’m satisfied with the taint. Then add the sb to stop the taint? Five gallon bucket with cheese cloth to cover during the tainting process?

I would taint the meat till you like it then mix in the solution and preservatives. Then continue to mix/stir every couple days for a month or 2.

id use something more substantial than cheese cloth. A pane of glass with around a 3 lb weight allows bucket to burp and keep out fly eggs.

cheese cloth wont work. you will get maggots. put a blue aerator stone in a plastic bucket lid. The kind that snaps down hard and tight.

I don't remember who first said that on here but its one of the better tips I've gotten from this site. they are cheap at Walmart. two three dollars a pair. if you don't have a drill grab a small nail with pliers. heat it up on the kitchen stove and burn a hole in the lid. the tube you hook the aquarium hose tube to needs to fit very tight in the hole. if it does you don't need glue. if you get the hole to big just calk around it

BTW don't buy that stuff on line its cheaper in the store.

Great solutions include Blackies, Dobbins, Marsyadas, Locklears, Jamesons, Weisers and there's even more I can't think of now.
A Gamma lid makes a 5 gal bucket lid screw on and off and well worth $6 of convenience to not have to wrestle orig lids.
Glue an aquarium airstone in place like Danny said, like this:
