I use both traps and until you use them both you can't understand how much better the trigger system works on the MJs it is a work of art not if anyone knows why they are no longer made. I have some I purchased when they first came out and never had to do a thing to them ever. Best trap ever made period they are expensive but when you consider how well they work and never fail or go out of tune they are worth it. They definitely are a great trap none better.

Guys help me out. I know the Sterling 500/600's are outstanding traps, and I know the MB 650's are also, but the 650 gets a lot of criticism because of a "dead spot". I'm guessing this "dead spot" is from the back half of the pan to the jaw. Looking at the top picture of the 500, I don't see where it is any different then the MB650. I'm not trying to discredit either trap, I'm just trying to get a better understanding as to why some folks prefer the Sterling over the MB. IMHO, I think if you use the argument that the Sterling is a better built/quality trap, you're splitting hairs, both are outstanding. If someone could post a picture of a MJ600, and explain why, that would be awesome. Thanks, I appreciate it! Dead spot on any trap is a matter of physics as it's the same place based on those physics. Any pressure on top of, or behind the fulcrum point of the pan, will be a dead spot. Knowing that you can figure out where it is on any trap.

I hope I didn't miss a correct answer on the dead spot, but will try to explain it. The legs of the pan, what it swivles on, are straight up and down on a 650. The legs on a sterling are angled back at near a forty five degree angle. That basically eliminates the dead spot on a sterling. All pans will differ from one end of the pan to the other, but the farther back, (towards the jaw) that the pan swivel is, the more even that pan tension will be from one end to the other. Hope this clears that up for you! Good explanation Lee. Makes perfect sense.

I'm going to let the cat out of the bag. Duke Is producing a MB550 style trap and It will be out sometime In June. Will most likely be a bit more affordable.

A few years back, I had 3 Wardens , trying to release a 4 year old Lion Tom from one of my MB550’s (2 coiled), didn’t work out !! How much harder would that be with a MJ 600 or MJ 500 Haha your wardens got issues. A single person can release a lion pretty simple with 2 catch poles. We release them from #3dls all the time.
If traps work like the Antis say......I would have no fingers.
