I think you are referring to normal breeding season behavior. Rats bite other rats.
A lot of guys don't trap rats in the spring because of breeding bite marks.

In the case of my recent damaged beaver, I've pretty much ruled out mink because it's a huge pond & no open water anywhere even close to where I got the beaver.
