Mike I usually just run a few traps at a time, but to answer your question about the cats, we do have a healthy population for sure. If I started when season opened and trap all season I'm sure I could catch 30+, but I'll usually catch 10-12 then pull my cat sets. I stay within 10 mile of my house

My experiment not moving anything did not seem to change much. Last year I moved traps around and had 7 coyote and this year 8 leaving them in one spot. but it is only about a 15 acre area so they are pretty much going to be exposed to the smells. That area is higher ridge that the area around it an has always been a fox and coyote trail. I have few cows and the neighbors have dogs running all over on my North side and that side has deer but that area in the south west corner seems to be the least problems. I have been using it to try out different peoples lures and different sets and often just one set to try a lure and this year all were double and one with bait which may be part of the more foxes. One thing that has worked is I am mowing half the field and not the other so there is a long line up the field and those four traps up that line have caught most of the coyotes and a good part of the foxes the last two years . It is not real grown up just higher grass and a few bushes. You might try that if you have a area you can mow on. Before when I mowed the whole field that line of traps would only have one or two a year. You guys have some great looking deer but soon as I get a patient you will need [Linked Image]
to buy one of my acme deer haulers.

One of the most fun trapping seasons so far. Unfortunately we had a very mild winter with very high water. It did pay off with some of my highest catch rates on rats this year. Biggest Coon I ever caught in the marsh. That's a 70Qt ice chest. Had a bunch of good pictures of the season but the phone went swimming one day. [Linked Image]

Sugar Cane Knife we don't use Machete's down here. Thinner blade, less effort to sharpen, and easier to swing

Rozoman, that’s pretty cool. I’ve never got to trap in a marsh like that.
Looks like big fun.

Unfortunately we don’t have many grays around where I live, i’ve Never caught one. I’ve also never caught a weasel, and try to avoid skunks. I usually put up lots of possum as well but not this year, I’ve Had 40 possum at NAFA for over a year. I worked hard at....I feel blessed to be able to enjoy my passion.

Clint its a lot of work and time consuming running every thing by 2 different boats. A lot of trap movement and water level changes. Usually when you find a good spot you will catch a nutria for 3 or 4 days then you have to move traps. The best trap location this year I pulled 15 rats off of the same two traps. I run two traps per pole. One with a chain about 3 foot long and one right at the pole. Nutria like structure like white perch. if you have a small tree or overhanging grass on the trail that's the best place to set for my area. I don't have to worry about competition because my land owner does life time trapping leases so I don't have to worry about trap theft. There isn't anybody 10 miles from me that still runs traps. Its mostly just ride and shoot type population control. The only competition I have is eagle/hawks and the alligators if they are out due to the weather. The only issue I have is I can't catch a muskrat to save my life. On my property the muskrats are doing the most damage. 150 Acre section there was between 25-30 muskrat huts and they are getting worse every year. I don't know if the marsh here is like what it is up north because the marsh actually rises and falls with the water level. So under the marsh there might be 6 inches of water or there might be 4 foot of water. Ive seen holes in the middle of the float that had more than 20 foot of water and the opening was only 5'X5'. So basically its like under ice trapping but with a floating prarie that you cant see the runs. You have to find air holes with a pole or step off in them, lol.

I can see where the rising and falling water levels would drive you crazy. What little water trapping I’ve done , that was a real pain. I almost exclusively snare beaver now, very few footholds.

Nice job weez
My wife and I just drove from southern Illinois through the southern tip of Indiana through Kentucky,Tennessee and Alabama to gulf Shores. I could tell by the amount of road kill Kentucky has a great amount of fur.

Jeez all that thin fur.... Any of you fellas down there ever consider trapping in the winter instead of summer? Season issue?

I'm kidding of course, great job all of you. Very impressive trappers.
