We don’t get any fluke or summer flounder in the gulf, we have southern flounder and gulf flounder down here. Fluke and summer flounder are on the east coast. They get around 5-7 lbs in the big range, 8-10 would be considered really big, over 10 trophy

They get big but it’s usually smaller average size fish this time of year, you get larger concentrations of bigger females during the fall run when they’re headed to the gulf to spawn, some wall hangers there

After I read your post I went back an looked and instantly saw the marks, never thought that game fish were done that way. Up here we spear frogs and if the water is right carp, but we use the carp in turtle traps.

I gigged flounder with my uncle in Biloxi, Mississippi in the summer of 1968, and again in 1969. We would take his skiff out to a barrier island on a calm night and gig them by the light of a Coleman kerosene light. You waded, and held the light high with a short pole. The flounder would be buried in the sand, but you could see their outline. You gigged them with a long handled pole with a sharp metal point. When you gigged them, you lifted them out of the water and ran your stringer through the gig hole. You had to be careful not to step on stingrays, as the would also be found feeding in the shallow water.

On a decent night, we could have 25 flounder and be back to the launch before midnight.
