I think the pot in pot call refers to the sound chamber of a call that is covered with glass aluminum or slate. I think calling them that is a fairly new thing.

Eh...wot?

calling turkeys is the easiest and most frustrating thing I know of

its all been covered pretty well beyond my basic knowledge.

I've been out both saturday of our season so far.
1st day, there were 3 gobbling with me, two in the hollers behind me, and one on the ridge in front of me.....I had a another one come into me in the fog, and never saw him until I got up to go back home - he never said a word

this past saturday, soaked to the bone, I sat through until noon - and never heard or saw a bird

I've learned you can 'pressure' 'non pressured' birds in a hurry. It doesn't take long for them to wise up.

calling does not pressure the birds, people pressure the birds. I have called Toms in 4 days in a row to where I could not get the shot and let them walk off and on the last day get them. I worked 4 hens yesterday trying to get the toms to come in. If you heard the hens giving me heck at 40 yards and me giving it right back you would have thought the birds are going to run. I did what they did. I killed a tom this am had 5 hens with him. One hen got to 15 yards of me and saw me. Started to do the unsure putts, the putts that they do when they see something but do not know what it is. She walked off after 10 mins with the tom in tow. I started to do easy low fast clucks it pulled him off her and I killed him. Hen turkeys talk a lot more than people realize and they make a lot more sounds than just a yelp cluck and purr. they will at times sounds like a chicken scratching. adult hens will peep. and kee. They will do what I call grows high snotty sound. I call all year to learn the turkey sounds. and in the fall the hens and young birds really talk to each other. calling does not pressure, they hear calling every day from real hens that sound terrible LOL But calling and the turkey seeing a human well yes there is the pressures. By the way, when we call those little jakes in and let them go we just taught the bird something. When we use decoys that just stand there and they come in on the call expecting something real we just taught them something. Some of you may say no way, yet you will say calling a bird in before the season and not seeing a live bird will educate the birds LOL Knowing when to go hard and when to go easy when to be loud and when to be soft is all learning and trying things. Oh remembering that there is no such thing as the turkey God LOL
