Starting in July in Maine momma will show them where the baits are. The baits I hunt have been there 30+ years and everything knows where they are.

That's a big bear, eb. I think I've read you're about ten years older than me. I'm 59 and don't have the stamina to do that anymore. Sucked too many pollutants into my lungs over the years. Hats off to you!

Thanks. The older guy in the photos is 74 now and still running them. I'm one year younger than him and I stopped killing bears a few years ago. I have not been on a chase since 2017. To busy guiding bait hunters and trapping.

If the evening winds lay down and you have good hearing you can hear the Bears come. Need to learn what to listen for. Just as often you need to know what your not hearing.

I never hunt bear over bait.Too unproductive, too much work.I prefer spot and stalk,as I can choose the bear I want.We are lucky here for that type of hunting. There are lots of bears.I can go north of where my trapline is to the old clearcuts and burns and spot 6 to 12 bears on any day. Most I seen in one day was 19,and that included a sow with 5 cubs.
Now that I hunt mostly for meat I like to see how close I can get to a nice 200lb'er in the open.If you are quiet and learn how to freeze, and the wind is steady,I have gotten within 50 yards of a bear in the open.
If I just want to get it done,150-200 yards is where I am confident of a sure kill every time with the 30-06.I have dropped some at 300 when hunting big bears for hides.
Sometimes I hunt for the sake of the stalk and use a rifle like an sks or a 30-30 marlin which I don't take a shot outwards of 100yds.
Although I now hunt for meat, the hides are important as I use them.
In good blueberry years spot and stock hunting is also productive in fall, although nothing like early spring.

Interesting, never did it because it is to unproductive. I've worked for two bait hunting outfits over the past ten years. It is a lot of work tending 75-150 baits for two months. Each outfit kills bears. I'd guess 500+ in the past ten years. I know of "0" shot by spot & stalk. Maybe Maine bears are smarter.

All the outfitters run bait.It is productive for the outfitter, lol.
It is unproductive for hide production.Spot and stock is also better than trapping (unless you have cages which are expensive) because of selectivity.
And for me,as a meat hunter now,I can buy my licence in the morning and often will have a bear a couple hours later.
All the fooling around with a bunch of baits etc is unnecessary. But some guys like to sit in a treestand or groundblind.I get that.[Linked Image]
Here is a nice one I passed on last spring.I seen 4 that day and passed on them all.If I had still been commercial hide hunting I would have taken them.
