Bury a foothold in front of your DP's. Or use some white PVC pipe and put 2 traps around them. Pound the PVC into the ground and bait it inside for a few days and let the coon get the bait and then set footholds on each side. This may be a problem with cats roaming

Roaming cats ARE a problem!
Get the US out of the UN and the UN out of the US.

Interesting. I have trail cam pic's and vid of live trap refusals. Being your free roaming situation I would do a couple things. I would make sure your live traps have hardware cloth to prevent reach ins and wire the trap to not close. Bait them with marshmallows and allow the coon to get comfortable going in and out with free grub. Then set it proper. Bait your DP's the same with marshmallows which will mostly not draw cats but coons can't lay off them.
I wonder if tap dancers walk into a room, look at the floor, and think, I'd tap that. I wonder about things.....

Sardines with tomato sauce. From the Dollar store. Chocolate syrup. That's what I am using right now.

4 Dp's set tonight on roads coming in with Tuna in water in them. 1 Live trap set with tuna in it, had soft cat food in it, never got touched. locked 2 white male geese in wire dog pen. put that inside a small enclosure with the gate open about 4" with a trap inside and 2 more Duke 1 3/4 around the cage inside the enclosure. Less than 5 feet from where the last geese were killed. This coon is going to bankrupt me if I do not get it caught. Are you living there or is that just a farm that you go to each day? I hope you get him tonite. You do know a coon has a good reach in a cage and will pull their heads off if he can, I hope you get him before that!

What FoxPaw said- I had a coon that would pull on a board on my chicken house. It was loose and he would go in and it would spring back. i didn't know it. I couldn't figure out how all my eggs were getting busted and eaten every night. After trying all kinds of things I finally sat on the back porch with my shotgun until I heard chickens and them ran out there with a light. I had my wife go in the front of the chicken house while I waited at the back and out of one of the corners squirted a coon? He died. I doubt I would have found that springy loose board. Some animals don't follow the rules for their kind.
Just passin through

I live here 160 acres lots of water and trees,we raise alot of birds. I caught 4 coons this month so far, two nursing's sows. Its a on going struggle, but this one has me stumped. I guess it will be another costly year at the KS trapper meet in October for more equipment. Where you at in Ks? Just curious. The coon problem sounds like a dandy. Can you locate where he is coming from? If so, a body grip in the trail would surely take him, and if no body grip traps, a 1 1/2 in the trail works well. Trap don't need to be covered, just bed tight and scatter some grass clippings to blend, and a little smear of a fishy bait on either side of the trap will clinch the deal! Good luck. Had one that killed two guineas in the pen, reaching through the wire. Caught him the first night, just a lone boar, prolly what is harassing you!

You say the coon are eating geese?Guess what your bait should be. For once Boco I am going to disagree with you. A coon is a curious critter and as such give him-her a change up to attract them. If a coon is raiding a sweet corn field the last thing I would try to bait them with would be sweet corn. Sardines, canned tuna, jack mack, marshmallows and syrup. You will catch him, sooner or later. Zim

Read any of the Ron Jones’ posts on snacking them into cages. OR look into Jonesie’s buried DP sets with little bits of different sweet baits. Not all coon go for mini-marshmallows or cookies, or anything else. But a combination of baits might trip their triggers.

my dad kept a 22 by the back porch door. it was his chicken saving rifle. you might need to stay up late with a window open to hear them.
daughter and son in law have a pair of Great Pyrenees dogs guarding their birds. they lose very few now. have to dispose of dead stuff pretty regular. had a dead bobcat a few months ago.

I have never had a coon avoid Jack Mackerel or something similar in a dp.
The difference between animals and humans is that animals would never let the dumbest ones lead the pack.
