At least the WDNR here will test your deer for free. The kiosk just outside town here has everything you need. Drive up, saw off the head, drop in bag, add tag and keep tag. Wait for results.

Meanwhile, I cut up the deer and pack in two gallon freezer bags in the freezer. Once results come back negative, we thaw out bags, clean and cut up the venison, and commence to canning. So far no positive. But it's a matter of time.

There are those who don't bother to get their deer tested and just eat 'em anyway. I can't do that. Took too many biology courses.

So is there any real statistics out there on how many cases they have found What percentage come down with it .Any case where a human contracted it?

No, no and no. The more they test, the more they find.

I bet if they had the same technology to test 20 years ago we would’ve had the same results all a bunch of

If you aren't looking, you won't find it.
If you look hard enough, you will.
And you can fudge the numbers with how you look for it.
Killing them all will never work, cause you can't kill them all.
And don't get me started on using hunting funds to do research on private game farms.

Could be. Who really knows. It's not for me I'm getting all venison tested. It's for the young people who we share this food with. They've got a lifetime ahead of them. I would never take a chance on jeopardizing their lives.

It is a hoax. A cash cow for the DNR's. Been in the west where it began over 40 years. No human ever contacted it. Deer meat has been consumed since it began. its origin has been traced back to a CO DNR biologist's experiment. If it wasn't for deer farms testing their herds they would have never known about it. And for the record I don't raise deer or anything else. I would step forward and get a paid vacation to shoot deer over bait at night but those are reserved for retired DNR people. I know one. You can talk about positive tested deer all day but very little deer deaths occurs from it. EHD kills way more deer than CWD does on a good year. Remember when a population is at max mother nature will and does use something for control whether it be CWD,EHD, or something new.

Goatman, care to expand on how CWD generates revenue for the DNR? Aside from the paid sharpshooters you refer to that are all ex-DNR employees? Or because you know one guy who does it, do you apply that label to all the sharpshooters? Not sure how things are run down in Illinois, but sharpshooters are rarely used here in WI. But I'm curious how a disease that kills deer and reduces the number of hunters and licenses generates revenue for the DNR.

I hear that argument a lot that CWD kills very few deer.my understanding of the disease is that it's similar in a way to HIV/AIDS. When a human contracts HIV/AIDS, that isn't what kills them, they will likely die from complications due to the disease, or a weakened immune system. Granted, CWD is a neurological disease and not an immune disease, but it verifiably weakens the animal to the point it is more susceptible to things that kill deer. Things like predators, cars and humans. There's a lot of landscape out there, and deer killed by EHD are relatively easy to find by simply walking the edges of water sources. Not the case with deer that die from CWD. They just keep over wherever they happen to be, if they haven't already been taken out by something else. CWD is a slow killer, EHD is quicker.

they tried for the near extinction plan here.

where people can and will hunt them you will get to very very few deer.

where everyone is saying not in my backyard and it is miles and miles of land that no one wants people hunting on because they all have 10 acres and none of them are doing anything but mowing the 2 around the house , the deer population doesn't really change much

America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

These purple areas are home to some of the states largest numbers of deer and deer collisions I have lived and hunted deer in a purple area for more than 50 years and I would say we now have less deer than we did 20 years ago ,Oh I didn't say some areas don't have more but the deer and habitat have been pushed into much smaller areas. How much influence do Insurance companies carry and what will the DNR do to appease them ?

The Illinois program is working pretty good from my understanding from that last reports and study's I have been reading, the prevalence rate has been growing very slowly compared to other states and from my understanding they won't need to use sharpshooters if people just worked with the DNR Vs complaining about them I have been to told for example if they want to test 100 deer in an area for CWD and hunters only turn in 80 then they have to go in with sharpshooters to get 20 more to get the numbers they need for the study's if everyone turned in there deer for testing they won't need sharpshooters but not everyone does that. To be fair tho the Illinois DNR has been really bad at explaining this to hunters when the program first started

We got it in the far northern part of the state a couple years ago. Let me rephrase it was detected a couple years ago. The wildlife folks have done extensive sampling and seem to be taking a logical approach. They have implemented voluntary testing and to date we only have 20 positives. They are all in 4 counties. It seems to be moving very slowly and the deer numbers have not been effected so far. The wildlife folks are very concerned as we hunters are. It is not legal to have any live game animal in your possession to transport one and certainly is not legal to ranch any. Of all the backwards stuff that happens these laws are very strictly enforced. Maybe that's why our numbers are so low and it is moving so slowly. I just hope somebody comes up with a fix for it.

CWD is nothing but an excuse for the DNR to pass rules and policies that they couldnt normally get away with or would be considered over reach (never waist a crisis ) even if you have to make somthing thats not seem like a crisis

They only want to find cases where they want to and not where they don't. A few years ago MDC was testing heavily in the area of the local deer farm . 50 miles away my brother in law found an emaciated buck stumbling around disoriented . This was on a MDC area with no deer pens around . He started with the area manager and notified him then he notified an MDC bioligist ,then drove down to the CWD testing station and told them . nobody even asked where the deer was located .he offered to show them where the deer was .they just blew him off .

The deer died and rotted away without anybody investigating
