I gotta bunch of syringes full of saline for wound irrigation. I have used only 2 of the bunch. They were left over from my wife's uncle. He passed away and when cleaning out his room they had me take a bunch of sty to the garbage. Those ended up in my trunk. Pretty sure I have a lifetime supply. I used same one on my home made pole this year as last. Worked fine. Keep the pole in my vehicle all the time.
Wish I had more time to trap....

Allison Medical is the brand of the disposable syringe I use on my pole I have always used Ideal Instruments since they are locally available. I would love to be able to buy a big fat bag of just the rubber pieces in the size I need. That's all that really needs replacing, I only need the plastic body and just the rubber piece, everything else is aluminum. Essence is harder yet on plungers. At least the complete syringes are cheap. I have an aluminum assembly that I push into the chest, so I swap mine out pretty regularly to make sure they glide nicely

Store the plunger OUT of the barrel after each shot, so the Acetone will evaporate off. Never tried rinsing it, but I can see that it could help.

I made my pole and use disposable syringe that we use for livestock. Think I've got 2 or 3 years out of mine and maybe 15 skunks. Got any pictures ? I was planning on making a pole for next season.

Got any pictures ? I was planning on making a pole for next season. Fast & Easy to make... Here's how I made my jab pole- I used 4' fiberglass post with a steel pipe to fit over end of fiberglass post, about 2" long cut 4 slots in one end of steel pipe file all burrs in slots cut off thumb piece (round top) of plunger to create a cross fit plunger into slots, file if needed for better fit Attach metal to fiberglass (epoxy or glue) and you are good to go. I did modify my pole to 5' long with handle. I cut off a golf putter (yard sale fine) and epoxy'd the putter handle to fiberglass. Plus a camo paint job.

I have only done 3 skunks with acetone , all 3 required a second dose . Is that common ? I gave them 12 cc then 10 cc

I gave them 12 cc then 10 cc I've done a few the past 2 years and used up one can of Acetone with no required second dose. Bought the second can from the same place and have to do several repeats of 25 mm. Beginning to think it is the Acetone.

The rubber swells and prevents the syringe from working. I use a light weight motor oil to coat it afterwards but that only goes so far. Now I replaced the rubber end with a chemical resistant O-ring.

Also been developing a longer syringe. A bit more complicated but it works great.

If you get tired of acetone, vodka is supposed to work as well. Got this from a bait maker who says bait makers using skunk carcasses won’t take an acetone dispatched skunk.

You run the risk of a ticket with an open bottle with vodka. Lot's of other things you can use that work just as good and cheaper.

Rubbing alcohol works for me, I have used the same plunger for over 100. I never rinse or worry about it. What percentage alcohol are you using ?

I use rubbing alcohol and it might take more than one dose, but then you can still use the skunk carcasses for other things in trapping…..and other animals are still attracted to it at a bait station. Acetone creates a toxic waste carcass mess that nothing will eat and also can’t be broken down in the bait/ lure room. It is ruined for bait making. Most folks are unaware of its use in this venue.

The jab stick I made, fits thru wire on Skunk/Coon size cage traps.
Welcomed kyron4 Same here. My favorite stick is a section of fiberglass tent rods. I think it has 6 sections. If he’s nice I might only connect 3 of them. If I need some distance I use all of them. When I’m done I just take it apart. The bango string keeps them together and compact. Fits through small cages easy.
Everything the left touches it destroys

Had thought about the screw type fiberglass chimney rods but the tent rods would work slick. The only hurtle would be to find a set w/o buying the whole tent....

Mostly, have to trim the syringes when I go to replace em. On my Comstock traps I have to cut ports in the trap as they're 1x.5 wire.

As soon as you get the job done pull out the plunger and syringe rinse them with some water then put them in a quart bottle of water works for me. Im still trying to decide though if the acetone is better then a 22 sub sonic in the chest which works most of the time either method just dont get them agitated. Going to try a high power air rifle this season and see how it works-in the chest should work fine I am thinking

There are a number of good products out there that work just as good but no shelf life. I keep several bottles around in my vehicles and shop just in case. Much easier to use.

I’ve been told by a lure/bait maker that skunk (bodies) killed with acetone have no value to bait makers. But skunks killed with vodka have bait value. Since this bait maker is 5-hours away and we don’t get that many skunks, we use acetone.

I bought a quart of Skouts Honor Skunk Odor Eliminater today at a local pet store. I find out if it works when I start setting some coyote traps.
57 years trapping. It's who I am. Every day is still as exciting as it was when I was a kid but a little more work.
