Is there something else that can be used and work as quickly. It's messed up the plunger.

Not really any replacement, at best the plunger will only last 2 shots. Just buy enough and plan ahead. same with needles always have a spare.

I made my pole and use disposable syringe that we use for livestock. Think I've got 2 or 3 years out of mine and maybe 15 skunks.

I gotta bunch of syringes full of saline for wound irrigation. I have used only 2 of the bunch. They were left over from my wife's uncle. He passed away and when cleaning out his room they had me take a bunch of sty to the garbage. Those ended up in my trunk. Pretty sure I have a lifetime supply. I used same one on my home made pole this year as last. Worked fine. Keep the pole in my vehicle all the time.

Wish I had more time to trap....

Had a skunk guy recently tell me he prefers MEK (methyl ethyl ketone) over acetone. Don't know how is for syringe life though.

I'll rephrase my earlier statement. If you use a syringe often it will last longer. flushing with water after the acetone will help prolong the plunger. using once or twice then not for a week or so is death on them.

I have always used Ideal Instruments since they are locally available. I would love to be able to buy a big fat bag of just the rubber pieces in the size I need. That's all that really needs replacing, I only need the plastic body and just the rubber piece, everything else is aluminum. Essence is harder yet on plungers. At least the complete syringes are cheap.

I have an aluminum assembly that I push into the chest, so I swap mine out pretty regularly to make sure they glide nicely

As soon as you get the job done pull out the plunger and syringe rinse them with some water then put them in a quart bottle of water works for me. Im still trying to decide though if the acetone is better then a 22 sub sonic in the chest which works most of the time either method just dont get them agitated.

Store the plunger OUT of the barrel after each shot, so the Acetone will evaporate off. Never tried rinsing it, but I can see that it could help.

I've never rinsed mine for the 2 or 3 yrs I've had it. I must have gotten lucky and had one the was made out of a better material. I just used one that I had already used on some cattle.

Second year on mine but quill will deteriorate the rubber overnight.

Fast & Easy to make...
Here's how I made my jab pole-

I used 4' fiberglass post
[Linked Image]

with a steel pipe to fit over end of fiberglass post, about 2" long
[Linked Image]

cut 4 slots in one end of steel pipe
[Linked Image]

file all burrs in slots
[Linked Image]

cut off thumb piece (round top) of plunger to create a cross
[Linked Image]

fit plunger into slots, file if needed for better fit
[Linked Image]

Attach metal to fiberglass (epoxy or glue) and you are good to go.

I did modify my pole to 5' long with handle.
I cut off a golf putter (yard sale fine) and epoxy'd the putter handle to fiberglass. Plus a camo paint job.

I have only done 3 skunks with acetone , all 3 required a second dose . Is that common ? I gave them 12 cc then 10 cc
