There was a reason when the conibear traps first came out that the beaver trappers called them the best thing since sliced bread.I could set up the channels and runs, catch the cream and be out of there in a week or to two. Some houses the beaver would take bait good but were far and few in between.I caught beaver if they were hungry or not.Now it's legal to set 10 feet away from a beaver house or dam where it used to be 25 feet.

Two inventions out of Canada in the mid 50's revolutionized beaver trapping in the north.=The snowmachine, and the conibear.
Forget that fear of gravity-get a little savagery in your life.

Just adding more information for people. The key to chopping ice is a pike.Has no chisel head but goes down to a pointed end.Once you get down thru the ice with the chisel it is amazing how fast you can then go the rest of the way using a pick. The pick is much quicker as you can break off huge chunks of ice with each hit.I even tryed a chain saw myself but it was slower.Another thing to save time and energy is only chopping and taking the ice out of where your actual conibear is and just shoving the fencing down thru the chopped up ice. Bruce, could share a picture of the pike? Did you make it or are they for sale? Thanks

They wont be using that stream now... The big Male beaver of the house always checks those streams coming into the beaver pond. One of my favorite locations for the big male beaver.

Unusual to have a house with beaver in and no feed pile mt That's what I was thinking. Had the same thing on a different pond last year. The beaver were there but no visible feed to be seen.

I don't know they're stashing their feed, nothing sticking out of the ice anywhere. I thought I might make a set near the mouth of the stream where it enters the pond. Rally mentioned out in the middle. I'll keep punching holes and see what happens.
I'm making trap chairs/platforms out of square steel tubing. I hate fabricating chairs on site. Slow and cold. I'll post some pics once they are welded up. Are you using #14 jumps? If so just make a cut into the pole and tap the end of the spring into the pole instead of building a platform.

When you get good at it you can set the #14, then flip the loose jaw up.Have the pan up as high as it will go.Put your hand under the flipped up jaw and pan holding the pan up as high as it will go and take your axe and tap the spring into the pole tapping on the other end of the trap. Then level your trap pan after you flip the loose jaw down.
