I worked at a station pumping gas forty-something years ago when the idea of self-serve was just coming into the area. I thought it was a gimmick that would never catch on.

A local TV station interviewed some people at a local station and no one was for it. One girl did say maybe they should have an attendant to help the old or people that didn't want to pump their own. We already have lines, so if you have an attendant they may have to go to the window to make change then come back, the danger of the attendant getting hit in the head will probably out weigh the other risks, or if you use a debit card I guess you would still get out to put your pin number in or give him your credit card. Our minimum wage hits $10 in July and up $1 each year til it peaks out at $15 in 2025.

Its a bill got up by the liberals and in Illinois they get what they want, so small chance it won't pass. We just got a 19 cent tax increase a while back. Big Bob summed up Illinois pretty good with "crazy", lol.

Some places around here just remove the tab that lets you lock the pump on.

There aren't many, but a few gas stations around here don't let you pump your own gas. The reason is safety and problems with drive-offs

When & where was that ? I have never seen that anywhere in the state that I have been .

Its safety and the environment gas spills often go in the gutter and back to the water ways. A lot of marinas wont let you pump gas either and if you spill it you can get fined. I guess i dont see a problem with it.

My wife has a cousin in NJ that has never pumped her own gas. She says she wouldn't know how...

I told her if she can operate her 3000+ lb vehicle on the NJ Turnpike then pumping gas should be a lark.

Trust me, if you can drive a car, you can operate a gas pump.

Fairbanks Costco has an attendant that watches me pump my gas. A single attendant can easily monitor multiple pumps. I'm sure our technology is advanced enough that pumps can be turned off remotely.

I pumped gas for several years. Also changed oil repaired and sold some tires.Changed burnt out headlights installed mufflers and greased vehicles. It was a good part time job.
For a while it was just 1 of the three jobs I had all at the same time .LOL I was 16 and walked to work at the first station.
BTW gas was less than a dollar for most of that time.

I pumped gas back in the late 60s. Always gave that windshield extra treatment on those hot summer days when a good lookin' gal would pull in.

Never heard of tipping a gas station attendant.

I prefer to use cash instead of a card. When buying gas that means you go inside and stand in line. Give the clerk some money. Go back out to serve yourself. Go back in to stand in line. Get your change.

i miss rolling down the the window and saying fill it up. I miss going to the local gas station to get a tire fixed or an oil change or a fan belt put on.

I detest these convenience store wait on yourself and get treated like a thief stations we have today.

I use my CC when out of my home area and no one knows me and wont turn on the pump. Not turning on the pump, so I can serve myself, makes my blood boil. I go to Casaey's whenever possible to avoid that rudeness.

I got to think if there was enough want for an attendant to pump gas some station would already do it. Maybe have those people that just don't want the hassle as regulars.. I'm pretty sure lot of the jobs some of us did at 16. Are now deemed to dangerous for a 16 year old to do. To much responsibility/liability for a mere child.. So my guess be some half wit 18-19 year old be one pumping gas now days..
I do find some irony in how many folks complain about self check outs in stores. Then go out side pump their won gas and are fine with it..Personally I don't think there needs to be a law of any kind to regulate any that stuff..
What ever happened to free market?
I pump my own gas then get right out there in that left lane drive right at speed limit..Makes the world crazy place.

If you can't pump your own gas you probably shouldn't be driving.

Easier to ration gas when someone else is in charge of the pump.
