The other night at a local basketball game, I observed a man with his hands in his pockets when the National Anthem was playing.

Most everyone else held thier hand over thier heart and being respectful. I asked my daughter about this man.

She explained to me he was a professor at CMU in Mt.Pleasant, Mi.. His wife is the girls JV coach. I'm thinking thats not right.

His wife stood and placed her hand over her heart.

So many liberals to spoil the stew!

I usally will render a slaute, which is proper today also for any and all veterans.

Even when I was in the scouts (Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and Eagles) we put up a salute.

Upon doing a PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE, our hand went over our heart.

Is there something that says you should hold your hand over your heart when the Anthem is played?

I've always wondered.

Hands in his pocket doesnt seem very disrespectful considering the many I see talking, walking around, grabbing food and drinks, leaving hats on.

(a) Designation.—
The composition consisting of the words and music known as the Star-Spangled Banner is the national anthem.

(b) Conduct During Playing.—During a rendition of the national anthem—
(1) when the flag is displayed—
(A) individuals in uniform should give the military salute at the first note of the anthem and maintain that position until the last note;

(B) members of the Armed Forces and veterans who are present but not in uniform may render the military salute in the manner provided for individuals in uniform; and

(C) all other persons present should face the flag and stand at attention with their right hand over the heart, and men not in uniform, if applicable, should remove their headdress with their right hand and hold it at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart; and

(2) when the flag is not displayed, all present should face toward the music and act in the same manner they would if the flag were displayed.

The Pledge of Allegiance
The Pledge of Allegiance was written in August 1892 by the socialist minister Francis Bellamy (1855-1931). It was originally published in The Youth's Companion on September 8, 1892. Bellamy had hoped that the pledge would be used by citizens in any country.

In its original form it read:

"I pledge allegiance to my Flag and the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."
In 1923, the words, "the Flag of the United States of America" were added. At this time it read:

"I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."
In 1954, in response to the Communist threat of the times, President Eisenhower encouraged Congress to add the words "under God," creating the 31-word pledge we say today. Bellamy's daughter objected to this alteration. Today it reads:

"I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."
Section 4 of the Flag Code states:

The Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag: "I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.", should be rendered by standing at attention facing the flag with the right hand over the heart. When not in uniform men should remove any non-religious headdress with their right hand and hold it at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart. Persons in uniform should remain silent, face the flag, and render the military salute."
The original Bellamy salute, first described in 1892 by Francis Bellamy, who authored the original Pledge, began with a military salute, and after reciting the words "to the flag," the arm was extended toward the flag.

At a signal from the Principal the pupils, in ordered ranks, hands to the side, face the Flag. Another signal is given; every pupil gives the flag the military salute — right hand lifted, palm downward, to a line with the forehead and close to it. Standing thus, all repeat together, slowly, "I pledge allegiance to my Flag and the Republic for which it stands; one Nation indivisible, with Liberty and Justice for all." At the words, "to my Flag," the right hand is extended gracefully, palm upward, toward the Flag, and remains in this gesture till the end of the affirmation; whereupon all hands immediately drop to the side.

Shortly thereafter, the pledge was begun with the right hand over the heart, and after reciting "to the Flag," the arm was extended toward the Flag, palm-down.

In World War II, the salute too much resembled the Nazi salute, so it was changed to keep the right hand over the heart throughout.

Better yet - go over and educate the professor. Just because he is a professor does not mean he is wise....

About 7-8 years ago I was visiting my friend on the military base. When they played taps and lowered the flag. I stopped the car and saluted the flag. My wife looked at me like I was crazy until I explained it to her. I have not watch ONE NFL football game since the would not stand for the National Anthem.

I think we need not be so judgmental. If the guy was standing there being quiet, what's the problem.

Sometimes I'll stand with my hands folded in front of me with my head bowed in quiet reflection.

I have always said the Chinese could come over and beat us to death with fly swatters and take over the country. Because we will be standing there wondering if it was good or bad or right or wrong. JMO

In Boy Scouts I learned that we should hold our hands over our hearts when reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, and to only salute when in uniform.

There was no requirement for putting your hand on your heart for the National Anthem.

And if you think about it, it makes perfect sense to put hand over heart during the Pledge--because you are pledging allegiance to our nation. Putting hand over heart when taking an oath is a very old custom.

Not so much for listening to a song.

I yell “ Knights” in my head every time I hear the national anthem and the singer says “gave proof through the night”. It’s just habit now.

So the pledge of allegiance was written by a socialist-how ironic.
