Hard to guess what it might be. Maybe try describing it (i.e. color, texture, size...)

That is the beginning of ectopic branching. The tree probably had a wrap on the trunk that you or someone removed. The tree is reacting to sunshine on the trunk sending out the first growth to become extra branches.

There hasn’t been a wrap on this tree for at least the two years i’ve had it.

Kinda looks like lichens growing to me. See them on treebark alot, and usually on the non sun side. I’d say you’re right Lee, it looks like there’s many variations of lichens. It caught my eye and for some reason only grew on the one tree.

Hard to guess what it might be. Maybe try describing it (i.e. color, texture, size...) Is it round, with smooth skin and a sweet, crisp taste when you bite into it? (I am sorry, Keystone. I just couldn't resist and no one else jumped in with that. I felt it was my duty.)

I haven’t quite got growing apples down yet. With the spray regimen that everyone recommends i don’t think i’ll even mess with it.
