That means my theory was exactly wrong. Pour motor oil on anything and the hogs rub on it- evidently the bears do it for other reasons

Yeah, I don't really know the meaning behind it. My old man said use old motor oil, so I did. I didn't care either way. It's the electric company's pole not mine, but it would be an inconvenience to lose power because he chewed the whole darn thing off.

I used to trap with a crazy man who would do anything to avoid getting a job. He would have freezers and freezers full of heads, paws, and beaver tails that he cleaned all summer long and sold to native artists and jewlers. Anyway, if I caught a mangy coyote he would hack off the head and paws and add them to his hoard.

Fist time I saw him get mange on his wrists he acted like it was no big deal, rubbed some motor oil on it and went on like it was nothing.

I always figured that is why the wild hogs rub in oil soaked posts or at the bottom end of a telephone pole- I assume they get a little relief from what ever parasites they have.

We use old motor oil as a bit of a cure-all. Animal deterrent, saw oil, wood stain, wood preservative, pot hole sealer, weed killer, fire starter, pest killer, cologne..I'm sure there is more I can't think of at the moment.

I believe there are several reasons why bears chew or mark poles. The treatment would be one, with no bark they are easier to claw into, they are in cleared areas if marking territory and the humming sound with the wind on the wire etc. attracts the bears and other animals as well. The power poles in and around the national forest where we hunt have some poles that are really scratched up and one can get an idea by looking at the height off the ground that some are made by some large bears.
