I've been to S. Africa, and imagined that.

Who banished a movie? As I understand it, the copyright owner decided to withdraw the movie from publication. That's their right.

In his books Faulkner put the N-word in the mouths of characters, i.e., in dialog.

But your point is valid. The N-word used to be in common use in the South and among some Northerners. Faulkner, a Southerner, used the word in private letters and speech. But in his novels and short fiction he always portrayed blacks as fully-realized human beings, with their own thoughts and emotions.

Jim

I guess I don't understand the correlation there. Do you think people that did or do use the N word think of blacks as something less than a human being with their own thoughts and emotions?

Some of them, but not all. I don't believe Faulkner did.

I do realize that back in the slave-holding era, that was a common thought, but then so were many other wives tales and superstitions. Some people back then didn't even believe black people had souls. But I think you'd have been hard pressed to find anyone that thought that way after the mid 1900s or so. Most people that used that word knew blacks were human beings just like they were, but due to varied reasons felt they were an inferior race.

Blacks used to be called "tar babies." The film's literal tar baby is a euphemism or metaphor for a real black person. Touch them and they will stick to you.

James, you claim to be an attorney too... I shouldn't have to explain it to you.
