you do realize that would allow me to hunt with a Rem 742 semi auto 30-06 which I already hunt with.technically it would also allow you to hunt with the M16A1., M14/M1A FN-FAL if you re-barreled a Mauser action from WWI or WWII you could make it in any cartridge you wanted the action would be over 50 years old.

Legal Gear for Primitive Firearms Season includes:

-Rifles or pistols, .44 caliber minimum, or shotguns 10 gauge or smaller, all of which must load exclusively from the muzzle, use black powder or approved substitute only, take ball, shot, or bullet projectile only, including saboted bullets. All of the above may be fitted with magnified scopes.

-Single shot, breech loading rifles or single shot, breech loading pistols, .35 caliber or larger, having an exposed hammer that use metallic cartridges loaded either with black powder or modern smokeless powder. All of the above may be fitted with magnified scopes.

proratman, I do like the "Nostalgic" thing. I usually refer to it as "Old School". I stumbled on to this "Old School" thing by accident. I hang on to my stuff and would break it out and use it from time to time. I started to get comments on my "vintage" stuff. The first time I was fly fishing on the Beaverkill and doing well. A guy came and sat on a rock watching me, short time later I figured to give him a shot that particular spot. I walked out and told him it's all yours. He told me he was sitting there to check out my "vintage" fly rod? I bought the fly rod new when I was 18. I started to get comment on my traps also. I was beginning to feel a little old, but now just enjoy doing a little reminiscing, on purpose. I did a little "old school" ice fishing last year, may have to do a "Nostalgic" deer hunt. My Great Uncle gave me his savage 99 .243, it was manufactured in 1963.

I really dig your idea of having the old school hunt for nostalgia sake. I have often thought about getting the old guys at our camp together to do just that. As far as your choices go you done good, pilgrim. Any one of those should be perfect for your hunt. These are two that I have that I would use. The '94 is a .30-30 (1957) and the model 64 deluxe is a .32 special(1953). Keep us updated on you choices and hunt. Sounds like a good time.

I never thought of it as vintage or old school.I've always hunted that way and still do.

I have my grandfathers Savage 30-30. Its marked on the bottom of the barrel SAV30. Its a lever action top loader. Steel curved butt plate, with half octagon barrel.

I have no idea when it was purchased. Only I know it had to been WELL used. When you load it be very careful prior to shooting it. Well worn seer.

Now you are talking my style of hunting. The only modern thing I carry is a phone, unless you count scopes as modern.

If they are in good shootable condition go for it. A competent gunsmith will tell if they are shootable.

Harvested plenty of game with both my grandpa's and great grandpa's 30-30. Those were the guns we first used after we passed hunters ed. So wish I could've hunted with my grandpa. The first hand stories I've heard are incredible.

So wish I could get ahold of 1 of the 30-30's so my daughter can carry on the tradition. 1 brother has 1 and doesn't hunt much so it's just there.

Love the sled. I have my late fishing buddies ice gear and sled. His used a Coleman lantern also. I see you have the modern Dual Fuel. I collect old gear, and many old Coleman lanterns, 80 that will fire up and at least a hundred parts lanterns. I hunt with red/black plaid Woolrich coat at times, Hunter orange hat though. His sled you sit on the rear and heat comes up between, under your legs. To warm your hands.

I have a pre WW2 model 94 in 32 special. It was my Pappy's Pappy's rifle. I shot my first deer with it over 50 seasons ago. I have slain others with it since. My Pappy's last deer was taken with it too. My late brother carved the stock on it back before I ever carried it..... Oak leaves and checkering type stuff. I wouldn't take 20 grand for it.

Most of us on this site are older guys. When I first started deer hunting in Northern Maine back in the early 1970's, I shot a couple of huge bucks with a brand new 30-30 that my dad had bought me. As time went on I graduated up to a 30-06. I found myself doing what everyone else was doing- sitting in a tree stand with a pretty rifle with a top of the line scope mounted to it. Many of the younger hunters of today would not even think that it is possible to kill a deer with a 30-30. But if you look back into the history of trophy deer and Boone and Crocket, a good portion of those deer were shot with "Brush Guns" by simply still hunting through the woodlands.

My Grandfather gave me his 99....(.250 Savage ). It’s a 100 years old. I’ll be using it this season.

Yep,you don't need the wizard and gadgetry that's out there today.I'm here in upper Michigan where baiting is legal,and you wouldnt believe the looks I get from younger hunters when they find out I don't bait.Just the basics have always got the job done for me.

no 45/70 lever guns?

Too much recoil. The 45-70 was designed to be a multi species big game rifle in heavy timber. Moose, elk and deer.

The 45-70 was designed first and foremost as a military round.......not hunting of any type. Also, as far as the recoil....it all depends on the load.

Now that's what I'm talking about. I'm a winchester man but the first time I handled and shot one of those 99s I was sold on them.

There is almost nothing like the balance and feel of carrying a model 99 savage. I grew up hunting with the "new" 250, while my dad used the older 303, I think a model 1899. All until the 303 cartridges became unobtanium. Family legend was that the rifles had both been carried horseback driving sheep between Oregon, Wyoming and South Dakota.
