Bear Tracker - I hope I can be out there at her age and dropping a nice buck!

Deer Fly - nice when a plan comes together, congrats.

Sunday was slow here. 3.5 hours in the AM at one site and no movement, not even any close shooting. 1.75 hours in the PM at another spot and very little movement. nice and warm hunting however. Missed a small spike Saturday and past on a doe at about 7 AM Saturday and probably should have been shooting.
Our son-in-law group got 4 deer and a coyote Saturday. Our son-in-law killed a coyote at over 600 yards. Today he missed one closer as he goofed up. He has very good and expensive equipment and shoots often and well.

Moosie is doing just fine, Nessie! Takes more than a little whiskey to knock me down!

Neither my son nor I have even seen a deer yet. Very little shooting in the area today, and nothing close. Problem right now is lack of pressure to move them around.

Back at it in the morning. Forgot what it was like to be on the road early in the morning listening to the crazy people on "Coast to Coast" talking about alien abductions, probing, walking through walls, communicating with their minds...on and on and on.

Sounds a lot like hunting in NH....of course we are old school ....and don’t use cameras.

Yeah, we stay pretty traditional. That's how I was brought up and carried it over to our son who will do the same with his sons. Since he bought his place I usually stay up there and do kind of a "deer camp" thing. Get up, make a good breakfast and head out into the woods. This year, due to Covid, things are a little different but we are having a blast anyway. I've killed a lot of deer in my day but really enjoy the meat so keep on doing it year after year.

Just something nice about sitting in a stand watching the sun rise and the wood coming awake. Maybe tomorrow something will walk by, maybe not but I will be enjoying myself either way.

Well Sunday was a day of mixed emotions. Helped the BIL track a deer he shot Saturday by our house about 4pm that we decided to let sit because the blood looked like a liver hit. Followed sporadic blood up to neighbor's property line to the West, I gave the neighbor a call and he said he observed the buck about 4:30 come out in the field he was over-looking, follow the edge east and enter woods in the SE corner of the field. He said it looked like it was hurting but with his buck tag filled he didn't shoot it. Got permission to enter his land, followed the blood and eventually lost it back on our property. Buck had traveled over 600 yds with out bedding down so we started grid searching the 40 we lost the blood on and came up empty. While walking back to the house we kicked out the largest deer I have ever seen hunting. 150 yds running away he was a heavy beam, wide 10 or 12pt buck would guess in the 160"+ range. I'm carrying a 12ga open sight slugger and had to watch him run onto neighbor's property. With the BIL along it could have gone on his buck tag but now is just a memory. Called the neighbor back to let him know we didn't find the deer and of the massive buck we saw, he said he saw him Friday evening feeding from 3 to 3:30pm and watched him head east into our woods. So good to know he spent two nights there, hopefully if we stay out of the West side of our property he comes back and get a crack at him come late season archery.

Good luck to everyone still out there!

Dave

Your neighbor is a saint if he let you 'grid search' his forty on opening weekend! Especially with a 160" buck around!!

Empty here yet as well. Three hours this AM and no sightings and very little shooting. Not much moving human or deer when it is this comfortable out.

The neighbor is a pretty nice guy but the wounded buck had traveled back on our property and that is where we had grid searched. We held off until Sunday 9am before starting the track out of respect for him and other hunters close by.

Shot this 9 on opening day at noon chasing a doe at about 80 yards, he was piled up under my stand still chasing her until he tilted over -not a wall hanger but was on our hit list. Sunday morning I shot a nice doe and my son shot a nice buck chasing a doe and then shot the doe- tagged out and already home.

You can’t be eating pigs in a blanket...Venison chili and beer before deer hunting..........

Sat for 3 days so far. Have seen 3 turkeys, a cat and a mink. No deer. Quite a bit of shooting around us. Maybe the rain and snow coming tomorrow will get something to walk by.
Congrats to all of those that have filled their tags. Some nice bucks shown here.

Nottin'! Did not hunt today with 4" of slop/snow/rain falling out of the sky. To top off this wonderful season our son called today and told us his wife was positive for Covid. He's going in for a test tomorrow. Glad we really kept our distance and I did not go into their house this weekend. Not sure how all of this will affect our hunting but they have 2 little boys, 3 1/2 years and 6 months old. Worried about all of them.

By the way, Nessie, the night of the deer hunt wifey and I had pulled venison sandwiches on home-made hard (hahd) rolls washed down with a couple cans of Leinenkugels. We had taken some of that out to our son's place for them too.
