I got a big fat beaver. I'm going to make a beaver hoop wall hanger. Cypress branches, etc. It's at the tannery now, but the tannery doesn't stretch fur. Just tans pelts. Does it matter that it won't be stretched on a board?

Just a weekend trapper...

Normally I would think you'd do the stretching & then send in for tanning

You'll probably be ok

The shape of the pelt will still be there, you just need to fit the hoop to the size of the pelt.

I'm not sure if you'll lose some size by not boarding it? That's a good Boco, Beav or Wissmiss question. I usually specify "Round" on the tannery instructions if I'm planning a hoop.

Even if you stretch first it will lose shape during tanning. You’ll want to block the pelt out to shape when you get it back

You're just making a decoration when you put a tanned beaver pelt on a hoop. Not like stretching a raw beaver pelt.
When your tanned beaver comes back from the tanner, dampen the leather and then take some push pins and pin the tanned pelt to a beaver board with the ovals marked.Pull it just enough when pinning to take out all the wrinkles.
Make sure you do any repairs to the pelt that is needed before wetting and pinning out the tanned pelt.
You can sew the legholes at this time if you like,or just pin them closed on the board.
Let the pinned out pelt dry for a day or two.It will retain the proper shape when you take it off the board.
Now you can punch holes all the way around the perimeter of the skin so you can lace it on to your decorative hoop.

Forget that fear of gravity-get a little savagery in your life.
