Before our coyote population dropped I got 12 coyote before seeing a flea, I got twice as many coyote then.
I bet you are right low host numbers lower flea population

I find more fleas on beaver than any other critter. crazy I know but it happens.

Probably a lot of this. When shooting in the west it’s always foxes that have the most fleas. Considering their fur valu versus the hassle I haven’t shot one out there since I can’t remember.
Coming across Dakota just a while back they were picking corn, I was amazed how clean the rows were between the stubble. No wonder pheasants and even bugs don’t find enough to live on especially thru winter. This being considered BucksnBears is an an area of agriculture and they have the same clean field environment but every mile corner has bee boxes it seems and I hear they do pretty well?

Could it be something as simple as high moisture from the last several years? Fleas prefer dry areas.

35 miles north of you T20 skinned a few more than that this year with no fleas but had one with lice that wasn’t worth skinning

Lice are nasty, I had mange and mites on some of mine, threw 6 away.
Usually about ten percent are no good, this year more than 10%
