Hey guys,

I have begun filming my adventures and am going to be starting a youtube channel. Have a whack of fisher trapping and walleye fishing videos already, but editing them is going to be time consuming...

My first challenge is just getting comfortable talking on camera.

Was driving today and just did a talking video.

Criticism encouraged guys and gals.

Can you flip it? On my screen you were driving on the right side and the logo "Northface" on your jacket was backward. Like it and look forward to seeing your adventures. Good luck.

Once I learn more I probably can.

Not sure how right now.

Okay you asked for it.

YouTube videos should always be horizontal. Turn your phone. Also, when you are looking into the screen on your phone it's like a mirror, just a backwards view of what the camera on the back of the phone sees.

You make some good points but you need to cut away to something visual to support what you are saying. If it's just you talking, people will skip forward looking for something more engaging and that's the kiss of death on YouTube. The cardinal rule is Show Don't Tell. Take the time to edit in some of the footage to break up the monologue. Also, just driving along is not the best place to be talking. Could you be working on something in your fur shed? Checking traps, building snares while you talk? Something to better show what you do and who you are. Everyone drives a car but not everyone checks beaver traps from a boat, you get the idea.

You do some things that will interest people, but finding viewers is tough. There are literally thousands of hunting and fishing YouTube channels dying right now because they can't get those first 1,000 subs and 40,000 hours of watch time to get monetized. You have to proivide very interesting content and then figure out how to get people to watch. It's a steep hill to climb.

I hope you pull this off, I will definitely be a subscriber and look forward to seeing the footage you have collected.

Thanks so much for the reply.

This video is actually so far from what I will be doing. I do winter snowshoe expeditions, trap off snowmobile, run my line in crazy weather by boat, at night..., swim with fish, go through the ice for fun...and will be filming it all.

the intent of this vid was just to begin getting comfortable with talking on camera.

I have pages of sketched ideas already.

Thanks for the support when it happens. I will likely delete this video after some more cirticism.

Looks good to me.. In your next video, I want to hear more about the $40 beavers. I guess your numbers are in Canadian dollars, so that would help. We have maybe $10 pelts and scrawny little castor sacs. How much can you get for beaver meat up your way?

You are an above average speaker and come off good on camera. You’ll do well.

You will need a good size computer with a load of memory space to do your editing on and more than just an iPhone to record your videos on. Sound is a big issue, you will need a dead cat microphone set up. Do your research when you buy a camera. Cold is your enemy, I suggest you buy at least an extra battery or two for whatever you buy.
I think Bernie gave you some solid advice
Jim.

Bernie absolutley nailed it on the horizontal filming. Vertical filming is the worst.
