What distance are most pistol targets shot at?

depends on the game

21 feet is common aka 7yards this was considered combat shooting distance for a long time

precision pistol as they now call it , used to call it bullseye is 50 feet

in indoor action pistol targets can bee from inches to the full length of the range but mostly fall in the 20-35 feet range as the steel must be shot form 25 feet or greater.

outdoor IDPA international defensive pistol the max target distance is 15 yards

in USPSA I don't think they have a max distance but most of the bays are about 25 -30 yards so not much more is possible.

So about 30-50 feet is a good practice distance,
I'll compare the two guns and different sights when the new one comes in

if your shooting is for self defense and not any particular game any distance you could encounter

there is value to drawing and shooting without using your sights at 6 feet

there is value to figuring out where to hold at 25 , 50 , 75 and 100

there is value to:
-shooting multiple targets , rapid target acquisition
- how fast you can shoot targets
- how precise you can shoot targets
- many drills to work on speed and accuracy and target transitions
- to learning to move and shoot (not allowed on many ranges)

if you think of some of the qualifications PDs use
they start with a target like you used for the qualification for MN
they call out threat and the officer has a limited amount of time to put a round on the target
in others they have to run 50 yards then engage a target
one of the local PDs nearby uses 2 barrels stacked and the target is about 7 yards in front of the barrels you have to draw shoot strong hand standing weak hand standing ,take a knee shoot strong hand kneeling then transition weak hand kneeling using the barrels as cover 2 rounds form each for 8 rounds time to beat 8 seconds if your knees are not working so well don't take a knee just crouch or switch sides twice

anything to get you moving and not in a stable position clearly you can hit well on aimed shots with a good stance from your qualification target
