I was looking at doing my wolf setups with the #3 HD Straight-link. Is this too light or should I bump it up to #5??? I see that the Jack Whitman setup is #7. I personally think that’s a little over kill but I am new to trapping so maybe I’m way off base . Any help or experience would be helpful. Thanks everyone.

I'm going to match the #5 chain that comes on the MB750 wolfer for my setup ... short chain with 4 swivels, inline wolf shock springs, welded hd j hooks.

POW Trapper -

I do a lot of summer wolfing for collaring, thus I prefer the #7 straight-link chain, as I deal with quite a few black bears as well. On POW, if you're winter trapping for wolves, I think you're fine going to the #5 chain. Just my two cents.

I run #5, you could probably get away with #3 if it was good quality chain. I know you could 90% of the time, look how many are caught in coyote traps that have #3 chain, but #5 isn't that much more expensive, and the extra strength will give you peace of mind. Also, #5 has bigger links which is really handy when you are attaching the chain to something, a 1/4" quick link works perfect in #5 and has to have a little percussive persuasion to fit through #3.

Most important thing, whether you are using #3 or #7 is make sure and weld all of your connections.

Right on thanks everyone. I decided to just go with the #5. I’m basically taking the jack Whitman setup but shortening my chain to 8 ft, using the #5 chain instead of #7 and I’m adding 2 smalle, lighter, drags to it.

I like a longer chain myself on drags they hook up faster.
