When I was 18 I think I could have checked off nearly a dozen from your list.
My kids, on the other hand could double or triple that. That's something I swore would happen when I realized how much academic crap I had learned, and how absolutely little practical stuff.

I potty trained all of our 3 kids. It only takes a day to potty train a kid.
My wife who mends all my clothes so I have no knowledge of how to do any of that stuff is currently killing her tomato plants. I swear that woman has a thumb that is some color other than green. I'll have to step in a bring them back to health if I'm gonna get her to make me a BLT in the future.
Did I mention that working together so that more skills come to bear against life's obstacles is also a skill?

the Garden thread and some comments there got me thinking about my life skills list
this is the list of things that should all be checked off I looked and it seems I started this list about 2012
this was my list of everything a 18 year old should know and have done I must admit I fell short on a few things with my oldest Daughter now 19 she hasn't left the house did her first year of college to become an art teacher from home online. her running a power saw , doing electrical work beyond replacing the end of an extension cord , or shooting a shotgun probably aren't going to happen .but the rest of the list is done and she has a lot of experience in some of the areas like baking. She also has some incredible art skills when I said you should help with this electrical or plumbing , I got , I will turn off the water and call you if the pipe breaks
she can shoot rifle and handgun, she chooses not to shoot although the opportunity is offered
what do you think , any additions needed?
Life skills
Cleaning skills
Scour a sink Scour a tub Clean a toilet Clear a drain with plunger , snake and liquid drain opener Clean windows and mirrors Wash dishes in a sink or dish pans Sweep a floor Vacuum a rug or hard floor Mop a floor , and wash a floor on hands and knees Washing machine and dryer operation
Cooking skills
Knife skills Kitchen safety food , cuts and burns Make salads Make pasta Eggs , scrambled , fried , baked and boiled Roast a chicken Make gravy Grill a steak Use probe thermometer Stir fry Make a sauce Breading fish and eggplant Cook rice Bake a cake Separate an egg Make bread , kneading Make a stew Make a broth soup Pressure cooker basics Canning basics
Financial skills Open an account Balance an account Write a check Count back change
Sewing Skills Sew on a patch like rank or flag patch Sew on a patch to mend pants Hem pants / skirt Sew on buttons
Workshop and tool skills Shop safety , glasses , hearing ,clothing , do’s and don’ts Check tire pressure Check oil on small engine Check oil and all fluids on car Use a circular saw Use a hand saw Use a hacksaw Use a drill - drill wood and steel Use epoxy Glue pvc Change a tire and jack safety ,4way and ratchet
Home maintenance repair skills How to turn off the gas How to turn off the water How to turn off the main breaker or fuse GFI what they are how to test and reset Circuit breakers , what they are how to reset, why they trip Volts , amps , watts , E=P/I , calculating a load Wiring an outlet Wiring a switch Replacing the end on an extension cord Water heater maintenance Replacing furnace filters Changing a door lock Clothes dryer maintenance - cleaning and checking vent How to find a wall stud How to fix a running toilet Replacing the end on a garden hose
Basic gun skills Hunters ed Load and unload Cleaning Rifle marksmanship Pistol marksmanship Shotgun on moving target clay
Employment , resume , application , and work skills. Fill out an application Make a resume Interview Most valued work skills - attendance , on time , on task , responsible , clear communication
Medical Cuts Burns CPR CCR Take temp Basic meds safety , Tylenol , ibuprofen , alive ,Benadryl How to make a 911 call what to say and what not to say How to apply a tourniquet Makeshift tourniquets Splinting Bleed stop
I'm glad you included wiring a switch/recep in there... You wouldn't believe how many service calls I've been on to change a light switch in someone's house. Last year I worked a call to change cover plates... Young couple, the guy was a manager for some construction outfit, so use of tools was likely not a foreign concept to him. Showing your kids how to do stuff not only teaches them valuable skills, it exposes them to different things and might help them decide what career path they would like to choose. My wife and (most) of my kids have no idea what an electrician's day to day job entails... Although my wife got a taste of it when I remodeled the shed. She helped pull the new feeders to the subpanel and helped pull all the branch circuits after I installed the conduit. Mike

some people get real funny about electricity I got a lot of experience working for a small construction company in high school. I was the electrician for a few projects , I had taken a residential wiring class , then the guy with the license would give a short run down of how everything had to be run in conduit , not more than 6 feet of flex / greenfield any where. that 15 minutes was the only time I ever saw him. I passed inspection on first go working all summer as an electrician also made me think harder about electronics school where I ended up going when I graduated high school.

When I look at the crisis this country is headed for, I figure the guy that can make the cleanest cuts on either side of the hearts on a pot still, will be pretty well set.
Nevermind. I'm pretty sure most have no idea what I am talking about.
