Just finished renewing my 2016 Ford Explorer online. NC cost plus property tax was $269. NC charged $3 for online credit card billing.

The tax is based on the book value of the vehicle.

You are mistaken. Only time you pay sales tax on the full price of a vehicle is if there is no trade. If you trade in a vehicle for another vehicle you only pay tax on the difference.

I stand corrected. I wonder if I can get a refund. When I went to the courthouse to license my last one they asked me how much I payed. I told them the full price, they didn't ask about the trade in. mad mad
