I'm sure most of you are aware of the series of Purge movies but some of you might not be. What they are about is one day a year it is legal to kill anyone for any reason with no criminal charges brought against you. They were very popular, and there are 5 of them, with the latest still being shown in theatres. Well the other day, a young couple went to see the movie, and another movie goer decided to act out the show in real life, shooting them both in the head right in the theatre. No one even knew it happened until the people cleared out at the end of the movie. They did catch the guy, a 20 year old man that may be Latino. This made me think of the debate as to whether or not violent movies and video games influence kids to be more violent. In this case it seems they certainly did. https://www.wlbt.com/2021/08/01/tik...rL55i19FZIw3cjR2Dgf5cEqtQ-iPtiHKxjNpc8G0

Its a messed up mind that made those movies and its a messed up mind that responds to those movies. Was the movie the tipping point? Maybe, but the foundation was laid before.

ok this is just me being curios , what gun do you not hear in a theater , maybe a 22 with press contact during a very loud part of the movie. how far apart were the other people sitting.
do games and movies desensitize people to the value of human life ? very possibly although I don't know that they need movies or games , Man the awful driving , swerving passing cutting people off I saw this weekend in Madistan was awful
am I willing to continue the freedom of speech allowing people to make such movies and games , yes , because as dangerous as the media might be , allowing censorship is the worse option .
and I certainly don't blame the gun, sounds like the guy could have just as easily stabbed them resulting in the same

I wondered how no one heard it too, unless it had a silencer on it. But then again, if there was a lot of shooting going on in the movie, and he did it during one of those scenes, people may have just thought it was really good sound effects.

Some kids lack the family teaching and morals we learned as a child growing up today. If you kill enough people or beat up enough hookers your rewarded by going to the next level then. You might get more rewards killing people in a game then in real life in some cases. After you kill so many imaginary people will muscle memory kick in then?
Weird world.

Unbelievable to me. I just cannot understand things like this and he himself was 20. Way old enough to understand his actions?????????

A suppressed. 22lr with subsonic rounds are basically a puff of air sound. Would be extremely easy to cover
If it makes a track on this earth , I can catch it.

Use the back of the seat during a loud part of the movie to hide the noise some theaters are so loud it would not be hard maybe to get by.

Mark David Chapman was supposedly all mental about The Catcher in the Rye when he shot John Lennon.
Some people are crazy. Some people are criminals. Some people are just bad people. Some are all three. When you start blaming something other than the person, we get into dangerous 2A territory.
If however we are going to lay blame, I think social media is worse than movies and video games, by far. Social media is not only a fantasy filled echo chamber, but it's also proving to be addictive.
P.S. I watched the first Purge. It was an alright movie. I would have defended my place way differently than Ethan Hawke did. I don't in any way think movies or video games should be banned. And while this isn't the case here, I do think parents should be more selective in what they let their kids watch and play.

We have a long way to go in treating and diagnosing mental illness. Progresss is being made but think how many centuries it took to get physical medicine to todays standards. Yet sttill much we cant treat and don’t know.
Those who would give up essential liberty, to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety. Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790)

Our modern era answer to psychiatric issues is typically the medical science of using pills. In some instances, perhaps another science is used to explore (psychology or sociology) the issues. As a result in the 21st century, 1 in 6 Americans is on a psychiatric drug (it seems much higher than that where I chaplain - I see about 1 in 3) and the medical sciences are ramping these numbers up more each year. I guess folks now believe a pill is the sole answer, because that's what they primality ask for and that's what they primarily get. I wish pills worked all by themselves like they claim to. They don't.
Blessings, Mark
