Anybody ever use pocket gophers to make a predator bait? Any suggestions or recipes ?

They work great but more for earlier in the season. I chop them up or grind them whole then age if you like or add SB to keep it fresher.


Common sense is a not a vegetable that does well in everyone's garden.

Pocket gophers are the bread and butter for many predators like our meadow voles. They should make a fine bait if worked up reasonably well. I constantly find dig ups in pastures and fields as I make my runs around my trap lines. If you know what you are looking for, they will become obvious to you.

The deeper gopher and vole burrows can create a digging frenzy from a coyote, fox or badger. Might be where the popularity of the dirt hole originated years ago. Someone put two and two together.

No doubt many of the popular sets used and duplicated today are from what someone has seen in the field while trapping. What can be more natural then that. A hole with a little dirt apron, there you go.
