Deer do get hit by vehicles in groups frequently too, when they run across roads in front of them. You seem to care about the deer a lot more than your game warden does. I see deer as tasty agricultural and landscaping vermin, that do tens of millions of dollars in damage to plants and vehicles, that kill and injure hundreds of people a year, because that's what they are. Deer kill close to 200 Americans each year and injure around 10,000 more. https://petpedia.co/deer-accidents-statistics/Nationwide, 58% of all field crop losses are due to deer and 33% of losses to vegetables, nuts and fruit are due to deer. https://agfuse.com/article/oh-deer-deer-damage-and-what-farmers-can-do-about-itDeer are vermin. Keith i would like to think that you are not one of those that would intentionally gut shoot one so that it when it ran off you wouldn't have to deal with it. That would be wasteful and inhumane.

Anyone that thinks it's ok to intentionally gut shoot an animal and let it wander off, suffer, and go to waste just plain disgusts me! Repugnant!
If a farmer has excessive damage and needs relief there are legal and ethical remedies. The deer can be killed in a humane manner according to state quidelines and the meat salvaged and provided to hungry families. "Mind your own business" indeed! This should be every honorable man's business. There are two types of illegal behavior - Mala Prohibita = bad because because government says so, and Mala In Se = bad in and of itself (morally wrong). This (if it was intentionally gutshot - which it appears to be) is definitely the later! Anyone that condones it should be doing some soul searching.
And it's totally inexcusable that the conservation officers didn't even show up. It would take all of thirty seconds to skin back to the hole to verify if it was shot. I would file a complaint with their director. I retired five years ago after thirty years as a CO in Utah - and I just can't take apathy toward those types of wildlife crimes. Done venting. ^^^^ THIS
the wheels of the gods turn very slowly

Not to change the direction of this thread, but name almost any animal that lives and they can become a problem. Deer, Coyote, Coon, Possum, Wolf, Bear, Eagle, Hawk, Starling, Beaver -----= etc. Some of those there are legal methods to deal with and some there aren't. The question that i pose to all of you -- is it any less ethical to remove the problem animal in any given species and why? I do believe that we can all agree that it should be done humanely. Is the poisoning of rats rated differently than the poisoning of coon or starlings?

States claim ownership of ALL wildlife, even if the state has zero invested in the critter. If deer belong to the state maybe the state should provide insurance to those who hit a deer with their car. State of Nebraska turned loose elk on properties, then shrug their shoulders when a herd of elk spends a summer in an irrigated bean pivot. Nobody is a worse manager of wildlife than the wildlife agencies.
Life ain't supposed to be easy.

Wildlife belong to the citizens of the states and the state's wildlife agencies have stewardship over them. The government does not own them. The citizens have varying views (some very extreme) of how that management should be conducted as we have seen in this thread.
