I would pick long eye relief traditional. Most red dots will, cover a 5-7 inch area at that range. I also would need the magnification for my vision.

Well at that distance the only logical scope choice is traditional. What kind of handgun and caliber we talking about?

I have two Burris long eye relief pistol scopes.A 2-7 and a straight 10 power. Both are excellent for long range.

if you need to see 250 to put a shot in a 6-8 inch vitals , you need magnification

1X is almost more like 0.95X it looks like things are almost farther away than they are I can ring steel with my 1x prism , prism is a blend of etched glass retical with imumination , very fast long but not infinite eye relief
they make a 3x fixed prism
they make red dot magnifiers if you will be doing a lot of close with th eneed to flip to far , but you still don't get a pin point dot

for the money a traditional 2-7 is really hard to beat

2X i have shot running deer at 10 yards all the way out to stationary targets at 420 yards it really shines shooting deer in the 20-140 yard range at 2x fast. with a quick turn your out to 250 easy

if you want to spend a little more money and get even more variable there are 1-6, 1-8 and 1-10 optics now and most of them also offer illumination they call these LPVO low power Variable Optics and they are very popular on AR's

Edit : I did a lousy job of reading the title , pistol scopes , most of the options I gave are for rifle or carbine but if you need 250 you still need some magnification even on a pistol
sadly with the steady increase in rifle and carbine scopes , it seems there are fewer and fewer magnified pistol scopes.

2-7 still seems to be the place to go just with fewer options

Scott, I'm not giving you any more gun advice. You just get my hopes up that you're going to buy something cool, then leave me hanging. No .350 Legend, no .22 mag. frown

In 2006 After my Stroke, Many of you gave me advice on a Zero recoil option for Antelope. The Striker. 243.

While recovering at home for months and against my specialist orders I went to Wyoming and took this young Buck at 251 paces.

Now at 82 my Dad will get a chance to shoot it for Deer next season I am re stocking it for R or L hand and getting a new upgraded scope.

And ADC , if It works out I'll still get a New Rifle soon...but getting this Set up for my Dad and I will come first

I like higher power scopes on anything i run (rifle or handgun) and do like my 3x9 burris on my contender -- 2-7 isn't bad either.

I took that lope with a cheap 2-7 Simmons back then it was a Miracle Shot through both lungs
I was prone with a short bipod and rear was sandbagged

If any good manufacturer put out a 3-4 x 12 or a 4x16 in a handgun configuration I would probably have one. My redfield 2x6 isn't a bad scope. my leopold isn't bad either (except that it is only 1.5 power) but looking through it is making your target shrink.

I own two Contenders. Both a 7-30W. One has a Leupold and the other a Burris. Variables to 8x and 9X pistol scopes. My longest shot has been 156 yards off sand bags.

vortex warranty is excellent you break it they replace it

sent it a red dot that had a battery issue , they sent me a new one in about a week

I had bought it 5 years earlier

the crossfire is the budget line price is usually 130-200 in this line

they do make a 9 inch eye relief scout scope in 2-7 in the crossfire line https://ads.midwayusa.com/product/1017081657?pid=854643
