Well when cats are on the upswing it is good management to take some to keep the line healthy.I also snare rabbits in winter for nice rabbit stews,so where the rabbits are there is fur.I was always a multispecies harvester, just cant pass up easy pickins.
The big ones with the good bellies go to the auction, smaller ones get made into mountain man style hats, bigger ones with poorer bellies get used for hood trim on shawls and parkas, and some get sold to taxidermists(extra work) that buy at FHA.And some tanned ones sell as wallhangers or dodem to Native people.
With such a diverse market,it helps a lot when you know how to grade a cat before you decide which market a particular skin will go into.

They are not hard to sell because of their luxurious and deep fur. They stand out from all other furs.

Just got a beauty back from the tanner,XXXLwith white feet skinned complete with a beautiful wide heavily spotted belly and fur 6 inches deep.

Sometimes people want a pair of Otterskin gauntlets and I trim those with the silver back fur from lynx. The silver back fur really is a nice contrast on the black otter fur.

Lynx are highly cannibalistic,so when snaring, its imperative to gang set.
Lynx often hunt in a pack(family group so multiple catches are not uncommon in some years.
A buddy of mine, the late Leon Lecours from hearst caught 5 at one jackpot in one check.

The set pictured is a experimental combination walkthru snare pen/jackpot setup.

Tanned complete 450 to 550,depending on size.
When manufactured into articles the return is quite a bit more for lynx compared to other fur.

I imagine a full lynx belly blanket would sell for many many thousands of dollars.
The matching to create that would be difficult to say the least. You would have to go thru hundreds of skins to get all the matching bellies needed for that.
A blanket made out of the silver backs would be much easier to match up,but would sell for less than one made from bellys.

Excellent, thanks Boco. It appears the second lynx is still alive. Are your snares not kill snares?

I had no idea about the cannibalism, interesting.

What is a jackpot set?

Eh...wot?

The little one just got in the snare before I got there handnt tangled up yet.
he was on his way to munch on the other cat probably.
They hit the jackpot when they find that nice motherload of beaver.

Do you think the little one would have preferred lynx over beaver?

I do only because the beaver was frozen and the other cat only half froze. If it was froze solid like the beaver I assume it would lick and chew the unfurred beaver.
Cats unlike canines are not well equipped to gnaw on large frozen chunks of meat.A frozen chunk of meat is more attractive, to cats especially. when feathered with an axe.

Interesting.

So the first cat wasn't there that long when the second lynx came along. It wouldn't take long to freeze a 20-25 lb. animal solid at below zero temps (Celsius or Fahrenheit). There must be a good population in that area right now. I guess that means you have a lot rabbits/hares too.

How many snares at that set?

Eh...wot?

All three were together, just not caught at the same time.
Lynx are on the upswing and are reproducing-yes a good number of hares.
I always set 8 snares at a jackpot so I know how many snares to look for on checkday.
